Softball pulls off emotional sweep over Keiser on Senior Day

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 27, 2019) – Senior Day for Beatriz Navarro, Ka'Deisha McCowen and Rebecca Falco of the Webber International University softball team was an emotional but great day for the Warriors. Webber swept Keiser University 3-1 and 8-4 in their final two games of the 2019 regular season on Saturday at Nancy Nichols Field.

After McCowen got the honorary start in the circle in game one, Raven White (8-2) came in with a 1-1 count on the first batter of the game and finished all seven innings allowing only seven hits, one run and only one walk.

Although technically not a complete game, White was great throughout, with the only run against her coming via a solo home run with one out in the top of the fourth inning.

Fortunately, Mary-Margaret Maggard responded in the next half inning with a solo home run of her own to right center to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Then, Webber took its first lead of the day in that same inning as Aja Eglton doubled to right field before coming around to score two batters later on an error by the Seahawks' shortstop.

Webber added another unearned run in the bottom of the fifth as CC Smith singled up the middle with one out, stole second base and then with two outs, stole third base and drew an errant throw from the Seahawks' catcher, allowing her to run home.

That theme of errors for the Seahawks leading to unearned runs for the Warriors carried over to game two as Smith, the Warriors' leadoff hitter, reached on an error by the pitcher in the bottom of the first before scoring on a one-out, two-run double to left center by Kaitlin Cockcroft to draw the Warriors to within one of Keiser at 3-2.

Webber added yet another unearned run in the bottom of the fourth as after a one-out double to left center by Samantha Rolfe, Beatriz Navarro laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the pinch runner Katey Sanders to third base. A bad throw by the Seahawks' second baseman trying to get Sanders out at third got past the third baseman and allowed Sanders to score, bringing the Warriors to within one again at 4-3.

In the fifth inning, Webber finally completed its comeback effort and took the lead for good, but it came thanks to three more Seahawk errors and two more unearned runs. In all, Webber scored four runs in the inning, all with one out. Smith led off with a single to shortstop and Anna Schutzler followed with a single to left to put two runners on with two outs. After that, back-to-back errant throws by the Seahawks' pitcher led to three runs before Cockcroft stole third base and took home on another bad throw by the catcher to make it 7-4 Warriors.

Then, if it being Senior Day and the potential to earn a sweep didn't already make things emotional enough, Webber amped up the emotions in the bottom of the sixth as Schutzler hit her first career home run, a solo shot to right center with one out to send the home crowd into a frenzy. It was a dramatic end what has been an emotional regular season for Schutzler.

The emotional efforts and inspired play continued for the Warriors during game two as Dariyen Moss (1-0) finished off the final 3.2 innings of the contest to earn what was her first win in her first decision of the season.

In all, Webber finished with five stolen bases, four doubles, two home runs and four sacrifice hits between the two games. Keiser, meanwhile, committed six total errors in game two and finished with nine errors on the day.

Head Coach Kristy Burton spoke afterwards saying, "What a way to end the season. I am so proud and happy for my seniors and everything they have done for this program. My girls fought for every out today and played as a team. Through both games, we worked through adversity and came from behind to win. This is the perfect way to end our regular season and we are looking forward to carrying this momentum into the postseason. With the two wins today, we have beat every team in our conference so I am hoping this gives us some drive going into next week."

Webber (25-17 overall, 14-10 TSC) used the pairs of wins to surpass Keiser (27-19, 13-11) in The Sun Conference standings.

Thanks to the two important Sun Conference wins on Senior Day, Webber will now enter The Sun Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed, which matches the Warriors up with this same Keiser Seahawks' squad, which is seeded No. 5. The TSC Tournament is set to begin on Thursday, May 2, at PFX Athletics Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont, Florida, and is set to run until Saturday, May 4, to decide a winner. Webber and Keiser will kick off the tournament at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
