Men’s, women’s tennis warm-up for conference against NCAA D-II Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, Fla. (April 20, 2019) – With the start of The Sun Conference Tournament only five days away, the Webber International University men's and women's tennis teams both played an important match at NCAA Division-II Florida Tech to try and get ready for their first appearances in the postseason in a long time. The Webber men fell 6-1 while the women fell 7-0, and now matches with the top team in The Sun Conference, Keiser University, await the Warriors in the TSC semifinals.
 
Notable Men's Results:
 
  • Hugo Hasegawa and Christof Buehler won 6-4 in the No. 2 doubles spot, but Webber still lost the doubles point playing under NCAA rules.
  • Hasegawa earned a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles for Webber's only point of the day.
  • Tare Mariga fell in three sets at No. 1 singles, falling 6-1, 4-6, 7-5; and Matthew Alexander also lost in three sets at No. 4 singles, falling 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
  • Ivan Bondarenko fell 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, Marc Schneider fell 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, and Buehler lost 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles spot.
 
  • The Webber men's tennis team finished its 2019 regular season 10-8 while Florida Tech improved to 6-12.

  • The Webber women's tennis team finished its regular season 8-9 while Florida Tech improved to 11-8.
 
Next Up: On Thursday, April 25, both of the Webber men's and women's tennis teams will compete together in the postseason for the first time since the 2011-12 season. The Webber men will play in the TSC Tournament for the first time since the 2014-15 season, and will take on a Keiser men's team that is ranked No. 6 in the NAIA. The Webber women have not been to the postseason since 2011-12, and they will battle a Keiser women's team that is ranked No. 2 in the country.
