Men’s, women’s tennis both fall in conference semifinals against Keiser


BRUNSWICK, Ga. (April 25, 2019) – The first appearance in the postseason in four years for either the Webber International University men's or women's tennis teams came to an end in the semifinal rounds of the 2019 Sun Conference Tournament on Thursday at the College of Coastal Georgia. Despite inspired play in doubles on both sides, each of the Webber men's and women's tennis teams fell 5-0 against Keiser University.
 
(RV) Webber Men's Tennis 0, No. 6 Keiser University 5:
 
  • Tare Mariga and Ivan Bondarenko played a very close match in the No. 1 doubles spot, falling by the minimum 8-6.
  • Hugo Hasegawa and Christof Buehler did well together but fell 8-4 in No. 2 doubles.
  • Kyle Hall and Matthew Alexander lost 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
  • Bondarenko (No. 3 singles) and Alexander (No. 4 singles) both lost 6-0, 6-0 to finish things off.
  • In unfinished matches, Hasegawa did well in the first set but was down 6-4, 1-0 at No. 2 singles, and Buehler found himself tied in the second set 6-2, 1-1 at No. 6 singles.
 
  • It was the first appearance in the postseason for the Webber men's tennis team since the 2014-15 season (4 years).
  • At the conference banquet on Wednesday night (April 24), senior Hugo Hasegawa was named First-Team All-Sun Conference for the second year in a row while fellow-senior Tare Mariga and junior Ivan Bondarenko were both selected to the second-team.
  • The Webber men's tennis team finished its 2019 season 10-9 overall while No. 6 Keiser improved to 15-6.
 
(RV) Webber Women's Tennis 0, No. 2 Keiser University 5:
 
  • Jenna Fosdick and Emily John played great at No. 1 doubles, but in the end could not pull it out against The Sun Conference Doubles Team of the Year and the third-ranked duo in the NAIA, Sarah Schaerer and Lorene Foerste, falling 8-5.
  • The only game the Webber women won out of the singles matches that finished came from Fosdick in the No. 4 singles spot, falling 6-1, 6-0 to No. 35 Aleksandra Grela.
  • Megan Kelson was shutout 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles against Emma Henriksen.
  • In unfinished matches, Paula John was down 6-3, 2-0 against No. 5 Daniela Farfan at No. 3 singles, Svenja Koenig was down 6-0, 3-1 against No. 30 Schaerer at No. 5 singles, and Isabelle Niehoff was tied in the second set 6-1, 1-1 in the No. 2 singles spot.
 
  • It was the first appearance in the postseason for the Webber women's tennis team since the 2011-12 season (7 years).
  • The Webber women's tennis team finished its 2019 season 8-10 overall while No. 2 Keiser improved to 17-4.
