BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 13, 2019) – For the seventh consecutive season, the Webber International University Warriors' baseball team has reached the 30-win mark as Webber defeated the University of South Carolina Beaufort 12-2 in seven innings in game one of Saturday's doubleheader before scoring four unanswered runs late to take game two by a score of 12-8.
Webber (31-16 overall, 12-9 The Sun Conference) got the much needed sweep against last-place USCB (19-26, 4-17) to put some pressure on No. 19 Warner University heading into the final weekend. Additionally, the three wins helped to pull the Warriors back into a tie for third place in The Sun Conference standings as Webber will look to assert itself as one of the top teams in a league that features four nationally-ranked teams.
After scoring eight runs in the first three innings the night before in a 14-2 win in game one of the series, the Warriors somehow outdid themselves and put up a big six-spot in the first inning of the first game on Saturday, highlighted by an RBI-double by
Quirino Esquivel, an RBI-triple by
Hunter Jones, an RBI-double by
Carlos Pino and two-run home run to right center by
Quinsly Balentien to cap it all off.
In all, Webber scored 11 runs in only three innings this time as all but one of those runs were unearned.
Doug Pearl (3-3) earned the game one win with six innings pitched allowing only the two runs on nine hits. Pearl was able to work around back-to-back singles with one out in the second inning, stranded runners at the corners in the third, and left two in scoring position in the fourth and sixth innings. In the seventh,
Joey Cutrone stranded runners at the corners for the second time for USCB, which in all, left 10 runners on base.
In the series finale, Webber led 4-0 after one inning and 7-2 after four innings, but after a five-run top of the fifth and another run in the top of the sixth for USCB, the Warriors found themselves tied with the Sand Sharks at 8-8 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
It was then in the seventh where an RBI-double to left field by
Cristian Rivera broke the tie and scored
Rougie Odor before
Garrett Martin brought in Rivera with a single to center.
In the eighth,
Marcus Begg tacked on to the Warrior lead with his 14th home run of the season, a no-doubter to left field to make it 11-8 at the time.
Gerig Blackman improved to a strong 7-0 on the season as a relief pitcher, finishing off the final 4.2 innings allowing only one run on seven hits.
"It was a good weekend of baseball for us," said Head Coach
Brad Niethammer. "We had one bad inning all weekend, but other than that, we played good baseball."
Next up for Webber will be a single nonconference game against the No. 1 team in the NAIA, Southeastern University, which was just swept by No. 10 St. Thomas University, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field. In the nonconference game between Webber and Southeastern toward the end of last season, in a year where the Fire would go on to win the NAIA World Series, the Warriors were victorious by a score of 10-9.
