BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 17, 2019) – The No. 19 Webber International University baseball team brought a new national ranking into its nonconference match up with the No. 1 team in the NAIA and defending NAIA World Series Champion Southeastern University, but a two-run home run by
Willie Carter and a 7-5 lead in the fifth inning would not be enough as the Warriors fell to the Fire 13-8.
Webber (31-17 overall) led 7-5 after a two-run single through the left side by
Norberto Navarro in the fifth, but the lead was short lived as an error by the Warriors in the next half inning led to five unearned runs, six total, for Southeastern (40-7), which reached the 40-win mark for the third consecutive season.
Then, after a sacrifice fly to center by Carter scored a run for Webber in the bottom of the seventh, Southeastern had back-to-back solo home runs to start off the eighth inning, and the Warriors were never able to mount a comeback to get back into it as Webber went down looking three straight times to leave two runners on in the eighth and then left the bases loaded with no outs in the ninth.
Navarro finished 2-for-3 in the contest with two runs scored, two RBI's and two walks, and
Quirino Esquivel also added two hits. Carter, who hit his program-record 18th home run of the season in the second inning to bring in two runs and make it 4-4 at the time, finished 1-for-1 on the day with three RBI's, two runs and an eye-popping four walks.
Next up for Webber will be a much anticipated series with Crooked Lake rival Warner University to end the Warriors' regular season. The action will start with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 19, and will then finish with the Warriors' Senior Day also starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. The Warriors and the Royals did square off in nonconference action to kick off the 2019 season as Webber bested Warner in both games by scores of 10-3 at home and 17-7 on the road.
