Webber tennis wraps up conference slate against SCAD; both teams headed to TSC tournament

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 13, 2019) – For the first time since the 2011-12 season, both of the Webber International University men's and women's tennis teams are headed to The Sun Conference Tournament. The Webber men's tennis team secured its postseason position with a 6-3 win over SCAD Savannah at home on Saturday, April 13, while the Lady Warriors fell to the fifth-ranked Lady Bees 8-1.

  • Fortunately, Webber answered being down after doubles to win each of the bottom five singles matches as Tare Mariga won 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot, Ivan Bondarenko won 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot, and Christof Buehler won 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 5 spot to give Webber a 4-2 lead.
  • That lead then dwindled to one as Hugo Hasegawa lost a tough match in the No. 1 position, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-2.
  • The clinching point for Webber then came from Marc Schneider in the No. 4 position by a score of 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), and then last but not least, Matthew Alexander gutted out the win at No. 6 singles in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
 
  • Webber, which is currently receiving votes in the latest NAIA Men's Tennis Coaches' Top 25 Poll, improved to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in The Sun Conference. The Warriors, who will enter the postseason for the first time since the 2014-15 season, have had their most successful season since 2013-14 when Webber held records of 13-10 overall and 5-2 in the TSC while advancing to both the TSC Tournament Championship match and the first round of the NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship.
 
  • In the first round of this season's Sun Conference Tournament, Webber will take on No. 6 Keiser University, which is currently 13-5 overall and 7-0 in the conference. Last season, the Seahawks won their third straight TSC Tournament title and reached the NAIA National Championship match.

  • Svenja Koenig won a three-setter in the No. 6 singles position, taking it 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (13-11) after a lengthy match tiebreaker.
 
  • The Lady Warriors, who are currently receiving the third most votes out of all teams listed in the receiving votes section of the latest NAIA Women's Tennis Coaches' Top 25 Poll with 41 votes, fell to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in The Sun Conference. On the women's side, Webber had its most successful season since the 2011-12 season, a year where the Lady Warriors went 14-10 overall and 4-3 in the conference and last made the TSC tournament.
 
  • In the first round of this season's Sun Conference Tournament, Webber will take on No. 2 Keiser University, which is currently 14-4 overall and 7-0 in the conference. Last season, the Seahawks won the TSC Tournament Championship and made it all the way to the NAIA National Championship match.
 
 
Next Up:  After nonconference matches with Florida National University on Monday, April 15, and at NCAA Division-II Florida Tech on Saturday, April 20, the 2019 Sun Conference Tournament for both men's and women's tennis will be held on Thursday, April 25, and Friday, April 26, in Brunswick, Georgia, and will be hosted by the College of Coastal Georgia.
