No. 25 baseball run rules USCB in eight innings in series opener

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 12, 2019) – The No. 25 Webber International University baseball team earned a 14-2 victory in eight innings over the University of South Carolina Beaufort in game one of their three-game series on Friday night at the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.

Webber improved to 29-16 overall and got back above .500 in The Sun Conference at 10-9 while USCB fell to 19-24 and 4-15.

Starter pitcher Zak Spivy improved to 8-4 on the season and pitched what was his seventh complete game performance in a row.

Spivy allowed only five hits and walked nobody while striking out eight, and the two runs against him came in the top of the third after two hit by pitches loaded the bases with one out.

Then, starting with the final out of the top half of the third, Spivy proceeded to retire 11 straight batters until a one-out single in the top of the seventh.

Offensively, the Warriors led 4-0 after two runs in each of the first two innings and then led 8-2 after a four-run bottom of the third and 9-2 after another run in the fourth. In all, the Warriors finished with 15 hits as Webber's top five hitters in the lineup combined for 13 hits of those hits, and also had a combined 12 runs scored and 10 runs batted in.

Webber's first four runs came on two-RBI doubles, first by Carlo Mancillas in the first inning and then by Norberto Navarro in the second.

The Warriors added another two-RBI hit on a single to right by Quirino Esquivel to cap of their four-run third inning; and then in the final inning, the Warriors sent everyone home early as Willie Carter absolutely blasted a ball to left field for his team-record 17th home run of the season before Mancillas finished it off with a three-run shot again to left field, his fourth homer of the year, to end it.

Mancillas finished 3-for-5 with five RBI's and three runs scored; Carter was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI's; Navarro was also 3-for-4 with two RBI's and added two runs and two doubles; Luis Esteban was 2-for-3 with three RBI's; Esquivel was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI; and Marcus Begg was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

"We pitched well, played solid defense, and got the bats rolling," spoke Webber's Head Baseball Coach Brad Niethammer. "That's what a good baseball game looks like."

The Warriors have now won six straight games against the Sand Sharks and will look to sweep USCB for the second time in two seasons as the teams finish up the final two games of their series at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. tomorrow on Saturday, April 13, on the Heart of Florida Field.
