MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 10, 2019) – For the third time in its last four outings, the nationally-recognized Webber International University softball team dropped the first game of its Sun Conference doubleheader before bouncing back to win the second game, this time splitting a pair of one-run ballgames at St. Thomas University on Wednesday at Col. Jacquelin J. Kelly Field. The Warriors dropped game one to the Bobcats 4-3 after a late inning comeback for St. Thomas; and then in game two, Webber was able to hold off the comeback to win it 5-4.
Webber saw its record move to 21-13 overall while the Warriors also reached the 10-win plateau in conference play, moving to 10-6. St. Thomas, meanwhile, moved to 21-13 and 7-9.
After St. Thomas answered a two-run home run to center field by
Samantha Rolfe in the top of the fifth inning with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth to get within one run of the Warriors at 3-2 in game number two, Webber responded with two more runs in the top of the sixth via a two-RBI double by
Victoria Atkinson.
Those final two runs would just be enough for the Warriors to hold on as the Bobcats got a two-run double of their own in the bottom of the seventh but left the tying run on second base after a fly out to center field and a groundout to second base induced by the Warriors' new pitcher
Stacy Pericles.
Starter
Emma Maitland (8-4) earned the win with only five hits and two runs allowed with no walks and five strikeouts over the first 6.1 innings of the contest.
In game one, however, Webber was unable to hold off a St. Thomas comeback that saw the Bobcats score three runs in the bottom of the sixth off of four different bunts against pitcher
Stephanie Johnson.
Raven White started game one and pitched great, allowing only four hits and one run through four innings, but it would not be enough for the Warriors to close it out.
Head Softball Coach
Kristy Burton had this to say, "The girls had a tough loss in the first game. Offensively, we came out strong early with our bats, but unfortunately late in the game, St. Thomas beat us with the small game. In game two, the girls made adjustments at the plate and we had some clutch hits coming off the bench. One from
Victoria Atkinson and one from
Samantha Rolfe when we needed them.
Emma Maitland pitched a great game for us and gave us a chance to stay in it. We look forward to using our success in game two going into the weekend."
The Warriors will now play the middle two games of a six-game road stretch by traveling to Keiser University for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 13.
