WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (April 13, 2019) – After beginning the day in a tie for second place in The Sun Conference standings with only eight games left, the Webber International University softball team came up short in two games against Keiser University on the Seahawks' Senior Day, falling 1-0 and 4-1 in West Palm Beach, Florida.
In game one, both pitchers held the opposition to only three hits, but it was a run in the third inning where the Seahawks' runner at third base scored on a throw down to second base trying to catch a runner stealing with two outs that made the difference.
Emma Maitland (8-5) pitched six innings and walked only one batter while finishing what was her seventh complete game of the year.
Meanwhile, the only three hits Webber got off of Keiser's pitcher, Autumn Green (17-7), came from
Ka'Deisha McCowen, who singled to shortstop to lead off the game,
Kaitlin Cockcroft, who singled up the middle with two outs in the second inning, and
Alyssa Rodriguez, who singled to center field with one out in the third.
Webber nearly scored the first run of the game in that third inning on a fly out to right by
Cassidy Roberts, but Keiser's Troiana Test threw out Rodriguez at home to keep the game scoreless.
In game two, Green (18-7) again earned the win and did not walk a single batter for the second game in a row.
Webber led 1-0 in the first inning as McCowen again led off the game with a hit, this time a double down the left field line before scoring three batters later on a double to left center by
Victoria Atkinson.
McCowen, Atkinson and Rodriguez would all go on to finish with two hits in game two.
Webber fell to 21-15 overall and 10-8 in The Sun Conference while Keiser improved to 23-17 and 9-9.
The Warriors will now play the final two games of a six-game road stretch by simply rounding the lake to Warner University for a doubleheader under the lights starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17.
