BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 10, 2019) – The No. 25 Webber International University baseball team shutout Florida National University 6-0 in game one and pitched a combined two-hitter before falling 8-4 in game two to kick off of a stretch of nine straight home games to end the regular season.
Webber (28-16 overall) scored six runs on only five hits in game one while
Tyler Buchanan (4.2 innings pitched, 1 hit, 5 walks),
Joey Cutrone (1.1 innings pitched, 1 hit, 3 walks) and
Trent Massaro (1 inning pitched, 0 hits, 0 walks) combined to do great work on the mound and work around eight total works.
Through the first three innings, two of Webber's three hits and four of its six RBI's came off the bat of
Luis Esteban, who smacked a three-RBI double to right center to make it 4-0 in the first and hit another RBI-double to left center to make it 5-0 in the third.
The Warriors' other runs in game one came via sacrifice flies as
Carlo Mancillas flew out to center field to score
Willie Carter for the first run of the game in the first inning, and then in the third inning,
Cristian Rivera flew out to right to bring in Esteban.
In all, Esteban finished 3-for-3 while Carter finished 2-for-4.
In game two, Webber fell behind 7-0 after only four and a half innings after a two-run home run and two RBI-doubles for Florida National.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Marcus Begg attempted to spark a Warriors' comeback with a big three-run home run just fair down the left field line to score
Norberto Navarro and
Garrett Martin.
In the end, Webber left 11 runners on base in game two.
Florida National (9-26) entered the day on Wednesday with a win over the-top ranked team in the NAIA, Southeastern University, back on March 25 already on its resume.
Next up for Webber is a Sun Conference series against the last-place team in the TSC, the University of South Carolina Beaufort. The Warriors and the Sand Sharks will get things started on the Heart of Florida Field with the single game at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 12, followed by the doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 13.
