BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 9, 2019) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team earned two wins over St. Ambrose University (Iowa) on Saturday at the Heart of Florida Baseball Field, winning game one 4-1 backed by the second straight complete game from
Zak Spivy before taking game two 9-6 backed by more home runs from
Willie Carter and
Marcus Begg.
Spivy (5-2) held the Fighting Bees to only one run with four hits and eight strikeouts over the seven innings in game one to earn his second complete game this week and third overall on the season. Spivy has also struck out eight or more batters three times as well so far. He entered the contest ranking second in all of the NAIA in innings pitched.
After two hit batters in the top of the fifth inning came back to haunt Spivy as St. Ambrose finally got on the board to tie it a one run apiece, Carter doubled with two outs in the bottom half of the fifth to score
Norberto Navarro from first base and give the Warriors back a run-one advantage.
The lead would quickly become three-run edge as in the bottom of the sixth, Webber added two insurance runs on an RBI-single through the left side by
Quirino Esquivel scoring
Hunter Jones before Esquivel came around himself to score on a double to deep right center by
Luis Esteban one batter later.
In game two, Webber struck first with a five-run bottom of the first inning as Carter hit his NAIA-leading 13th home run of the season to right center to score
Rougie Odor, who led off the game with a walk. Then, after back-to-back hit by pitches by Begg and
Carlo Mancillas,
Quinsly Balentien came up big with a two-run double to left center to make it 4-0 before the Bees recorded a single out in the game.
Webber's final run in the first inning of game two came on a hit to shortstop by
Taylor Byrd scoring Balentien. It was the first career hit and first career RBI for Byrd, who was also making his season debut on the Warriors' varsity squad.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Begg hit a two-run homer of his own scoring Carter to make it 8-3 Warriors. It was the eighth homer of the year by Begg, who is top-eight in the NAIA in home runs.
Gerig Blackman improved to 5-0 on the season with his second win in two days finishing off the final 3.2 innings allowing four hits and three runs with no walks and five strikeouts.
The Warriors' record improved to 15-10 overall with the pair of wins while St. Ambrose fell to 0-5.
Webber will finish off its current stretch of five games in three days on the Warriors' home field with a single game between Webber and St. Ambrose at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 10.
