BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 10, 2019) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team completed the three-game sweep over St. Ambrose University with an 8-4 decision on Sunday afternoon at the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.
The win moved Weber to 16-10 overall as the Warriors finished off the week with a record of 7-1 heading into another packed week of games during Spring Break next week. St. Ambrose, meanwhile, fell to 0-6 on the season with what was only their second series of the year so far.
Ricardo Garcia (2-3) earned the win with seven innings pitched allowing seven hits and two runs with one walk and seven strikeouts. It was the second straight start and second straight victory for Garcia, and it was also his longest outing of the season so far.
Freshman
Rey Rodriguez finished off the final two innings allowing five hits and two runs.
After the Fighting Bees took their first lead of the series with a run in the top of the third inning when the Warriors decided to trade a run to turn a double play, Webber answered right back in the bottom half of the third as three errors by St. Ambrose, including two by the shortstop, led to three unearned runs for the Warriors.
The first run of that third inning for Webber came off the bat of
Willie Carter, who doubled down the left field line to score
Garrett Martin.
Webber would add three more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Carter scored on a walk by
Carlo Mancillas, and then
Quirino Esquivel singled to left center to score both
Marcus Begg and
Rougie Odor.
Carter would go on to finish the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Esquivel was the other Warrior with multiple hits as he finished 3-for-4.
In two days on Tuesday, March 12, the Warriors will play their 11th straight home game with a 6 p.m. start time against Viterbo University out of Wisconsin.
