BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 8, 2019) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team began its stretch of five games in three days on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field with a doubleheader split against Doane University on Friday. The Warriors brought out the bats in a big way in game one and won 17-9 as
Willie Carter broke the Warriors' single season home run record with 12 now; and then in game two the Warriors fell 5-3 after a three-run lead after one inning.
Carter started off game one with a triple off the top of the wall in right center before scoring the first run of the game, and then in the second inning Carter doubled to deep left center to score three runs and make it 6-1 Warriors.
Then, in the bottom of the fourth inning, Carter smacked his 12th home run of the season with a shot again to left center to make it 7-5 Webber. The home run put him first on the Warriors' list for most home runs in a single season, passing the number of 11 home runs by
Marcus Begg and
Chris Medina last season in 2018.
"Congrats to
Willie Carter on breaking the school record in home runs," said Head Coach
Brad Niethammer. "In 26 years of baseball, it's pretty impressive setting that record on March 8."
However, the theatrics and offensive explosion for the Warriors was just getting started as after the Tigers tied the game at seven runs apiece with two runs in the top of the fifth, Webber exploded for 10 runs in the bottom half of the fifth as the Warriors sent 16 different batters to the plate in the inning.
After a walk to Carter, the big blast of that fifth inning for the Warriors was a three-run home run to dead center field by Begg to make it 12-7 at the time. In all, Webber finished with seven hits in the inning.
Gerig Blackman (4-0) earned the win with 1.1 innings of work in relief, allowing three hits and one run with no walks before giving way to
Trent Massaro for the final inning.
Carter finished 3-for-3 with four RBI's, three runs scored and two walks;
Norberto Navarro finished 2-for-5 with two RBI's and two runs;
Quirino Esquivel and
Quinsly Balentien were both 2-for-4 with three runs scored; and
Carlos Pino and
Carlo Mancillas also each added two hits while Begg finished with four RBI's matching Carter.
In game two, Webber led 3-0 after a first inning featuring a leadoff walk by Navarro, a single to right by Carter and a two-RBI double by Begg all before the first out.
However, the Warrior offense then disappeared as Webber finished with only three more hits the rest of the way despite putting a runner in scoring position during each of the next three innings.
John Shutrump (0-2) took the loss despite lasting six innings as he surrendered five runs on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Rey Rodriguez finished off the final inning with three straight strikeouts.
Offensively, Carter was 2-for-4 in game two while
Cristian Rivera finished 2-for-2 with a walk.
The Warriors' record moved to 13-10 overall while Doane's moved to 3-7.
The current stretch of five games in three days on the Warriors' home field will continue with another doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, March 9, against St. Ambrose University (Iowa) starting at 4 p.m., followed by a single game between Webber and St. Ambrose at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 10.
