BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 6, 2019) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team earned what was its sixth and seventh straight wins on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field on Wednesday, using strong starting pitching and four home runs to take down the University of St. Francis (Ill.) 5-1 and 8-1 and improve its overall winning streak to six straight games.
Webber, which is now receiving votes in the NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, improved to 12-9 overall on the season and completed the three-game sweep over St. Francis, which fell to 2-8.
The Warriors won game one on Wednesday thanks in large part to seven innings of three-hit baseball with one unearned run, four walks and four strikeouts by pitcher
Marcus Pritchard (2-1).
The Warriors led 2-0 after two innings as a sacrifice fly by
Carlos Pino in the first inning scored
Willie Carter and a single to right by
Quirino Esquivel in the second inning scored
Carlo Mancillas.
Then, after an unearned run on a fielder's choice in the top of the fifth put St. Francis on the board, the Warriors widened the margin in the next half inning with back-to-back home runs to left field by Carter and
Marcus Begg to make it 5-2.
It was the sixth home run of the season for Begg and was the 11th of the year for Carter, which now ties him for the most home runs in a single season by a Warrior with Begg and
Chris Medina, who both hit 11 home runs a year ago in 2018.
In game two,
Ricardo Garcia (1-3) shutout the Fighting Saints through his five innings allowing only two hits to earn his first win of the season, and then
Gerig Blackman and
John Shutrump both combined to finish off the final two innings with no earned runs allowed.
In all, the Warriors did not allow any earned runs throughout all 14 innings on Wednesday.
Offensively, Webber led 8-0 in game two as Mancillas blasted a moonshot home run to left field to score
Kevin Snyder and make it 2-0 in the second inning before
Norberto Navarro homered to left field himself in the fourth inning to score
Rougie Odor and make it 6-0.
It was the second home run of the season Navarro and was the first for Mancillas.
"Today was two pretty well-played games," said Head Coach
Brad Niethammer. "We are starting to play better and more consistently."
The Warriors will now return in two days yet again to the Heart of Florida Field for five games in three days with a doubleheader against Doane University starting at 4 p.m. on Friday March 8, followed by a three-game series against St. Ambrose University (Iowa) on Saturday, March 9, and Sunday, March 10.
