THOMASVILLE, Ga. (March 29, 2019) – Despite loading the bases twice in the final inning, the No. 24 Webber International University baseball team was held scoreless through six innings and had no extra base hits overall in a disappointing 4-3 defeat at Thomas University on Friday inside Varnedoe Stadium in Thomasville, Georgia.
Webber (25-12 overall, 7-6 The Sun Conference) stranded runners on third base in the first, fourth and fifth innings and was held to only five hits until the top of the seventh when an RBI-hit by
Willie Carter scored
Cristian Rivera from second base for the Warriors' first run of the contest.
Carter would go on to finish 2-for-4 while
Quirino Esquivel was 2-for-5, and leadoff man
Norberto Navarro also reached base multiple times with three walks.
On the mound,
Zak Spivy (7-3) pitched what was his fifth complete game in a row, but it was a three-run bottom of the sixth for Thomas (17-16, 3-7) that featured a two-run home run from Jake Bryan that came back to bite Spivy and the Warriors.
In all, Bryan brought in three RBI's in the game for the Night Hawks as his RBI-groundout to third base back in the first inning brought in the first run of the ballgame.
Spivy, would finish with eight innings pitched, nine hits and four runs on his line while his counterpart, Jorge Meran (4-3), finished with eight innings as well but held Webber to only seven hits and one run while also striking out seven.
In the top of the ninth, Webber's
Rougie Odor led off with a walk against the new Night Hawks' pitcher Hassan Westbrook, and then with two outs, Navarro then drew his third walk of the game to bring the tying run in Carter to the plate.
From there, the Night Hawks elected to intentionally walk Carter to load the bases for Esquivel, and the decision backfired as Esquivel singled on a full count to drive in both Odor and Navarro and move Carter into scoring position at second base for
Carlo Mancillas. Â
Â
Webber proceeded to load the bases for a second time in the final inning as Mancillas walked after another full count, bringing up
Carlos Pino who unfortunately, struck out swinging to end the threat.
Despite the late drama, it was the seventh save of the season for Westbrook, the Sun Conference leader in the category and the only TSC pitcher with more than two saves.
"We just got outplayed tonight," spoke Webber's Head Baseball Coach
Brad Niethammer. "Thomas played well and we couldn't get anything going on offense. We will be back at it tomorrow."
Webber and Thomas will play the final two games of their series tomorrow, Saturday, March 30, starting at 12 p.m.
