No. 24 baseball breaks program home run record during split with Thomas

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (March 30, 2019) – With a solo home run by Cristian Rivera in the top of the seventh inning of game one on the road against Thomas University on Saturday, the No. 24 Webber International University baseball team broke its program single-season home run record with what was its 45th long ball of the season still with 12 games left to go in the regular season. Unfortunately, the record breaking home run came in a 14-7 loss for Webber in game one before Willie Carter salvaged the weekend with a grand slam in the top of the ninth of game two to push the Warriors to a 5-4 victory.

Webber (26-13 overall, 8-7 The Sun Conference) broke its previous single-season home run record of 44 set just last season in 2018. Thomas, meanwhile, saw its record move to 18-17 overall and 6-8 in the conference.

Down 3-1 in the top of the ninth during the series finale, the Warriors put together a strong rally that started with three straight singles by Garrett Martin, Rougie Odor and Norberto Navarro to bring up The Sun Conference's leading home run hitter in Carter.

Carter greeted Thomas' closer Hassan Westbrook with a grand slam on a 0-1 count to make it 5-3 and give the Warriors something to be enthusiastic about for the first time all weekend.

Thomas did get a run back in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly before the final out was recorded on a base hit by the Night Hawks where the potential tying run, starting at second base, rounded third just a little bit too much and was unable to get back in time before being thrown behind and tagged to end the game.

Relief pitcher John Shutrump earned the game two win and improved to 2-2 on the season after pitching each of the final seven innings of the contest.

Navarro finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, one of which scored Odor for the Warriors' first run of the contest in the top of the seventh inning. Odor, Carter and Quirino Esquivel each added two hits in game two as well.

In game on Saturday, Navarro was 4-for-5 with two RBI's, a run and a triple; Willie Carter was 3-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a double; and Rivera also added two hits, two RBI's and a run.

The Warriors scored one run for five innings in a row starting in the fourth and ending in the eighth, but it would simply not be enough as the Night Hawks scored 11 runs during a three-inning span starting in the fifth.

Overall on the day, Navarro finished a combined 7-for-9 with three RBI's and two runs scored, and Carter finished 5-for-8 with five RBI's and two runs scored as well.

After an exhibition game with Hillsborough Community College at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, Webber will be back at it with a huge TSC series against No. 10 St. Thomas University on Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6, on the road in Miami Gardens, Florida. The first game of the series will start at 6 p.m. on Friday followed by the doubleheader at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday. Earlier in the season, Webber and St. Thomas, ranked No. 6 at the time, split a pair of games as the Warriors won game one back on Friday, February 1, 2-1, before dropping the game on Saturday, February 2, 7-5.
