Snyder’s home run helps No. 24 baseball run rule Ave Maria in nonconference action

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 27, 2019) – After the first career home run for senior Kevin Snyder in the bottom of the eighth inning, the No. 24 Webber International University baseball team earned a 14-2 win over Ave Maria University in eight innings during nonconference action at the Heart of Florida Baseball Field on Wednesday afternoon.

In addition to finishing a very impressive 18-2 during its 20-game home stand which started way back on February 28, the win for Webber (25-11 overall) also gave the Warriors the season-series victory over Ave Maria (13-21) after the two teams split their previous four meetings.

In the last meeting between Webber and Ave Maria back on February 23, the Warriors set new program records in both runs (27) and in hits (26), and this time around on Wednesday, Webber again displayed its offensive firepower with the wind blowing out toward Crooked Lake as the Warriors belted three home runs and had 11 different players score at least one run while nine different Warriors had at least one hit.

Down 1-0 and without a hit until the fourth inning, Webber finally got on the board and put up five runs in the bottom of the fourth as Luis Esteban was hit by a pitch for the second time on the day to bring in Carlo Mancillas for the first run, and then RBI-singles by Cristian Rivera, Garrett Martin and Norberto Navarro kept the inning going.

In all, the Warriors would score in each of the final five innings of the game as they then led 6-2 on a RBI-double down the left field line by Martin in the fifth and went ahead 7-2 after a solo home run to left by Mancillas, his third of the season, in the sixth.

A three-run blast over the wall in left center by Willie Carter in the seventh inning made it 10-2, and then after a second RBI-hit by Martin in the eighth, Snyder came up to bat with two outs and with Rougie Odor and Martin aboard, and Snyder ended it with his first career long ball to straight away left field. The home run for Carter was his 15th of the year so far.

Martin would finish the contest a very impressive 4-for-4 with three RBI's, two runs scored and a walk. Rivera was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI's.

Starter Tyler Buchanan improved to 3-0 on the season with seven strikeouts through five innings where he allowed only five hits and two runs. The Warrior bullpen consisting of Marcus Pritchard, Joey Cutrone and John Shutrump then finished off the final three innings pitching one frame apiece and allowing only two combined hits over the final three innings.

Head Coach Brad Niethammer said, "Our pitching did a good job today and we got the bats going in the middle of the game to help pick up the win."

Next up for Webber will be their first Sun Conference series on the road since their last meeting with Ave Maria. The Warriors and the Night Hawks of Thomas University will do battle at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 29, followed by the series doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 30.
