Warriors bring out the bats to finish off sweep over Seahawks

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 23, 2019) – After squeezing out a 4-3 win in walk off fashion the night before, the No. 24 Webber International University baseball team put up a combined 25 runs during games two and three of its series with nationally-recognized Keiser University on Saturday at the Heart of Florida Baseball Field. In the end, the Warriors won game one on Saturday 13-6 and earned the sweep with a 12-5 victory in game two.

Both wins came in large part to one huge inning in each game as the Warriors batted around each time and all but put the games out of reach with their offensive firepower.

In game one, Webber led 9-1 after an eight-run bottom of the second featuring RBI hits by Cristian Rivera, Norberto Navarro, Willie Carter, Marcus Begg and Carlos Pino before finishing off the inning with a sacrifice fly by Quinsly Balentien.

In the eighth, Begg hit a laser home run to left field to cap off the scoring. It was Begg's 11th home run of the year, matching his career-high he set last season, which at the time was the Warriors' single-season record for home runs. Begg now has 32 career home runs in three seasons with the Warriors, and has hit at least 10 long balls in each campaign.

Begg finished 2-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored in game one while Carter was 2-for-4 with two RBI's and three runs scored and Navarro was 2-for-5 with three RBI's and a run. Pino and Quirino Esquivel also each added two hits for the Warriors while Balentien and Rivera both scored twice.

Starter Doug Pearl (2-2) earned his second straight win, going six innings while allowing eight hits, six runs and four walks. Gerig Blackman continued his great relief work, allowing only one hit and no runs to finish off the final three innings of the game and earn his first save of the season. Blackman has not allowed an earned run in his last 10.1 innings.

In game two, the Warriors scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to turn a 3-1 deficit into an 8-3 lead. After an RBI on a fielder's choice by Nolan Soliveres, Rougie Odor hit a two-RBI single to center before Garrett Martin hit a two-run home run to left center and Carter hit a two-run shot of his own to right field.

It was the third home run of the season and of his career for Martin while for Carter, the home run was his 14th of the year, increasing his new Warriors' single-season record in the category.

Webber added a third two-run home run of the game and fourth home run of the day in total with a shot to left field by Soliveres to finish all of the scoring in the series.

Carter finished 3-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs in game two while Soliveres was 2-for-5 with three RBI's and two runs, Odor was 2-for-5 with two RBI's and a run, and Esquivel was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

After five innings by starter Rey Rodriguez giving up only two hits and only two earned runs, John Shutrump (1-2) earned his first win of the season by pitching the final four innings allowing five hits and two runs with one walk and six strikeouts.

The pair of wins put Webber (24-11) above .500 in The Sun Conference for the first time all season at 7-5 while Keiser fell to 20-13 and 8-7.

"It was a very good weekend of baseball for us," stated Head Coach Brad Niethammer. "Anytime you can sweep in Sun Conference play, you played pretty well. We continue to improve and we will clean up a few areas and be back at it next week."

Overall on the series, Carter hit .636 with seven hits, five runs scored, four RBI's and three walks while Navarro hit. 400 with six hits, four RBI's and three runs scored.

Webber is now 17-2 during its current 20-game home stand, which will end on Wednesday, March 27, with a single nonconference game against Ave Maria University starting at 2 p.m. Webber is currently 2-2 against Ave Maria in 2019 after setting a new program record for runs in a single game with 27 in their last meeting back on February 23.
