BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 22, 2019) – The No. 24 Webber International University baseball team made a nice statement on Friday night against nationally-recognized Keiser University, scoring two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and winning it in walk off fashion by a score of 4-3 in game one of their three-game series at the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.
Down 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth,
Garrett Martin walked and
Norberto Navarro came up with a bloop-single to right center to put runners on the corners.
Then,
Willie Carter drew a full count walk to load the bases and bring up
Marcus Begg, who on the second pitch of his at bat, smacked a ball just over the glove of the right fielder for the two-run, walk off double to score Martin to tie it and Navarro to win it.
It was Begg's first hit of the game after going 0-4 in his first four at bats.
Carter and Martin both reached base four times overall as Carter finished 2-for-3 with two walks while Martin was 2-for-2 with two runs and two walks and Navarro was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
Back in the fifth inning, it was Martin and Navarro who got the Warriors on the board first as just as he did in the ninth, Martin walked with two outs. Then, after a stolen base by Martin to get into scoring position, Navarro brought him in with a single to center field.
After a two-out rally led to the first run of the game for Keiser in the top of the seventh, Webber answered in the bottom half with a run on some heads up base running by
Quinsly Balentien to take a 2-1 lead before Keiser took the lead for the first time in the game with a two-run top of the eighth inning off of Webber's starting pitcher,
Zak Spivy (7-2).
In all, Spivy finished with what was his fourth complete game win in a row, allowing only five hits and three total runs, only two of which were earned, to go along with only one walk and seven strikeouts.
It was a proverbial pitchers' duel until the final two innings as Spivy's counterpart on the mound, Chad Tworek, pitched the first seven innings holding Webber to eight hits, two runs, two walks and seven strikeouts. In the ninth, it was Keiser's third of four pitchers in the game, Fletcher Byrd (3-1), who suffered his first loss of the season after walking Martin and allowing the hit by Navarro.
Webber (22-11 overall) used the win to get back to .500 overall in The Sun Conference at 5-5 while Keiser fell to 20-11 and 8-5.
Begg is now on a 12-game hitting streak for the Warriors while
Carlo Mancillas is on a 10-game streak and Navarro is on a streak lasting seven games.
The Warriors and the Seahawks will finish up the final two games of their series at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. tomorrow on Saturday, March 23, on the Heart of Florida Field.
