Men’s volleyball completes season sweep over Barons

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. (March 21, 2019) – With only three matches remaining in its regular season, the Webber International University men's volleyball team swept Brewton-Parker College 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-10) for the second time this season on Thursday night in Mount Vernon, Georgia.

Webber led by 10 in the first set at 19-9 and then led by 12 at 22-10; and then in the second set, the Warriors quickly went up by 12 early on at 14-2 and won the set by 12. In the third set, the Warriors led by scores of 13-2 and 19-8 before leading by 13 at 22-9 and winning it by 15.

Webber also swept Brewton-Parker in the first meeting between the two teams at the beginning of the month on March 2 in Babson Park, Florida, when the Warriors hit .463 percent for the match. This time around, Webber hit .394 percent overall after hitting .429 percent in the first set and .455 percent in the second.

After leading both teams with 12 kills in the first meeting, Luke Taffer again led both teams with a match-high 11 kills on Thursday. Taffer hit .588 percent while Orlando Fletcher recorded seven kills and hit .875 percent and Zachary Ayala had six kills with a .308 percentage.

Playing as the setter for the first time in his career, Liam Gilchrist finished with 15 assists. Justin Beecher and Tim Rouch Jr. both added eight assists as well.

Defensively, Steven Bartlett recorded his second straight match-high in digs against the Barons, finishing with 17 while Trevor Johns added a career-high 10 digs and Pedro Lepever had a match-high four blocks.

With the win, Webber improved to 6-9 overall in its second season as an official NAIA varsity team and improved to 5-6 in the conference in its first season as a member of the Mid-South Conference. Brewton-Parker, meanwhile, fell to 2-15 overall and 1-10 in the MSC.

Webber will play on the road for the second night in a row tomorrow against a tough St. Andrews University squad at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 22, in Laurinburg, North Carolina. The first meeting between the Warriors and the Knights back on February 22 was a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-20) win for St. Andrews in Babson Park, Florida.
