KANSAS CITY, Mo. (March 20, 2019) – For the second time this season, the Webber International University baseball team has cracked the top 25 of the NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll. Webber re-entered the poll at No. 24 on Tuesday, March 19, after previously being ranked No. 18 in the preseason edition of the poll.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions. The Top 25 is determined by a points system based on how each voter ranks the best teams. A team receives 30 points for each first-place vote, 29 for second-place and so on through the list.
Webber currently finds itself 10 games above .500 overall on the season at 21-11 but is 4-5 in The Sun Conference. Webber has won 18 of its last 21 games dating back to February 18 and is 14-2 during its current home stand, which started on February 28 and will ultimately span to 20 straight games ending on March 27.
The Warriors, who are one of four teams from The Sun Conference ranked in the top-25 this week and are one of five teams from the conference receiving votes overall, received 113 votes after collecting 31 votes two weeks ago. In the preseason poll back in November, Webber collected 210 votes to come in at No. 18.
In front of Webber from The Sun Conference is No. 1 Southeastern University (26-3, 6-0) with 498 votes, No. 10 St. Thomas University (25-7, 7-2) with 346 votes and No. 21 Warner University (26-9, 7-2) with 156 votes. Keiser University (19-11, 8-4), which was ranked No. 17 two weeks ago, is now in the receiving votes category with 16 votes.
Webber currently owns wins over St. Thomas (ranked No. 6 on Feb. 1) and Bellevue University (ranked No. 23 on Mar. 4) and defeated Warner (unranked at the time) in two games to start the season back on January 25 and 26.
The Warriors will now take their new national ranking into a three-game conference series at home this weekend with Keiser starting with the single game at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 22, followed by the doubleheader at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.
The Warriors still have a nonconference game against No. 1 Southeastern (Apr. 17) and three conference games against both No. 10 St. Thomas (Apr. 5-6) and No. 21 Warner (Apr. 19-20) remaining on its schedule.
The next regular-season poll will be announced in two weeks on Tuesday, April 2.
