Webber tennis Spring Break recap

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 14, 2019) – The Webber International University tennis teams played a couple of matches during the first few days of their Spring Break as both the Webber men's and women's teams earned a win over an NCAA Division-II opponent.

The Warrior men fell to NCAA Division-III Case Western Reserve University, which is ranked No. 14 in the NCAA Division-III National Coaches' Poll, 7-2 on Monday, March 11, at the USTA National Campus before taking down NCAA D-II Post University 5-2 on Wednesday, March 13 at the Beerman Family Tennis Center. Additionally, the Lady Warriors defeated NCAA D-II Winona State University by one, 5-4, at home on Tuesday, March 12 in Babson Park, Florida.
 
Webber Men's Tennis vs. No. 14 Case Western Reserve (Monday, March 11; USTA National Campus):
Highlights
  • Matthew Alexander and Kyle Hall won the first doubles match to finish (No 2 doubles; W 8-3) to give Webber a 1-0 lead.
  • Webber's other two doubles teams, Ivan Bondarenko and Tare Mariga in the No. 1 spot and Hugo Hasegawa and Marc Schneider in the No. 3 spot, both lost by identical 8-6 scores in two close matches.
  • Webber's only win in singles came from Hasegawa in the No. 1 spot as he took down Max Vicario 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 1-0 (10-2).
  • Mariga lost 6-4, 6-1 in No. 2 spot to Sam Concannon and Christof Buehler fell 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 5 spot to Chaitanya Aduru.
 
Webber Women's Tennis vs. Winona State (Tuesday, March 12; Babson Park, Fla.):
Highlights
  • Webber led 2-1 after doubles thanks to an 8-4 victory by Isabelle Niehoff and Svenja Koenig in the No. 2 spot and an 8-7 (7-4) tiebreaker win by Jenna Fosdick and Megan Kelson in the No. 3 spot.
  • However, after three loses to open singles action, Webber won each of the final three singles matches to earn the team win. Koenig won 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 5 spot, Emily John won 6-3, 7-5, in the No. 1 spot, and the clincher came from Kelson in the No. 6 spot with a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) three-set win.
 
Webber Men's Tennis vs. Post (Wednesday, March 13; Beerman Family Tennis Center):
Highlights
  • Playing under NCAA rules, Webber won the doubles point thanks to 6-3 wins both at No. 1 doubles by Ivan Bondarenko and Tare Mariga and at No. 2 doubles by Matthew Alexander and Christof Buehler.
  • Hugo Hasegawa cruised 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Bondarenko won 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) in a comeback effort at No. 2 singles to put Webber ahead 3-1.
  • Then, after a three-set loss at No. 4 singles by Marc Schneider, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7), the winning point for the Warriors came from Buehler in the No. 6 spot as he was victorious 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
  • Mariga finished the night off with yet another win for the Warriors as he took No. 3 singles by a score of 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) in a comeback effort of his own.
 
Next Up:  Webber's next currently scheduled match is for Wednesday, March 20, at 10 a.m. against another NCAA D-II school, Franklin Pierce University.
