BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 12, 2019) – Seniors
Marcus Begg and
Quirino Esquivel each finished with three hits to help propel the nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team to a 13-5 victory over Viterbro University (Wis.) on Tuesday night at the Heart of Florida Field.
Webber improved to 17-10 overall on the season while Viterbo fell to 5-7 after falling to both the Warriors and Warner University on Tuesday. The win for Webber was also its 14th win in its last 16 games overall, and was the 10th win of its current 11-game stretch at home which will extended to a 20-game stretch by the time it is all said and done.
Trailing 4-0 after only two and half innings, the Warriors responded for eight unanswered runs over the bottom of the third and fourth innings to take control.
The Warriors were benefitted by back-to-back RBI doubles by
Willie Carter and Begg in the third inning, and then in the fourth inning
Norberto Navarro singled to left to score
Cristian Rivera,
Carlos Pino singled up the middle to score Navarro and Carter, and then Esquivel singled to center to bring in Begg.
In all, Begg finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI and a walk; and Esquivel finished 3-for-5 with two RBI's and a run scored.
Navarro finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's, two runs scored and a walk; Pino was 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a walk; Carter also finished with two hits, two runs and a walk; and Rivera was the fourth Warrior to score two or more times.
Marcus Pritchard (3-1) pitched five innings allowing nine hits and five runs with one walk and four strikeouts.
Joey Cutrone then struck out two in the sixth inning,
Rey Rodriguez and
Gerig Blackman both struck out one in the seventh and eighth innings respectively, and then
John Shutrump struck out the side in the ninth.
In two days on Thursday, March 14, the Warriors will host Purdue University Northwest in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. before returning to Sun Conference action with a three-game series against Florida Memorial University starting with a single game at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 15.
