Baseball sweeps Purdue Northwest before heading back into conference play

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 14, 2019) – One day before restarting Sun Conference action, the nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team continued its impressive home stretch with two more wins, capitalizing on two strong starting pitching performances by a pair of freshman making their varsity debuts to take down Purdue University Northwest by scores of 8-1 and 10-6 in two seven-inning games on Thursday.

The Warriors are now 19-10 overall on the season and have won 16 of their last 18 games overall. Additionally, Webber has won 12 of its 13 games during its current stretch of consecutive matchups at home on the Heart of Florida Field, and is 16-2 at home overall on the season. Purdue Northwest, meanwhile, fell to 2-10 overall on the year with what was its sixth and seventh straight defeat.

Game one was highlighted by the first career complete game by Austin Seeman (1-0), who lasted all seven innings allowing eight hits and only one run with only one walk. The left-hander from Weeki Wachee, Florida, rebounded after letting up a run in the top of the first by holding the Pride to only six hits the rest of the way and recording three 1-2-3 innings.

Seeman did his work while the Warriors' offense put up eight unanswered runs, including at least run in each of the first four innings to go up 7-1.

Webber tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first after an RBI-double off the wall in left center by Marcus Begg scoring Norberto Navarro; and then the Warriors put up three runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI-hit by Garrett Martin scoring Quinsly Balentien and a two-run single by Navarro bringing in Luis Esteban and Martin.

Five different Warriors recorded two or more hits as Navarro led the way with a 3-for-4 effort after recording three hits in each of his first three at bats. Navarro also added a double, a stolen base and two runs scored, and was one of three Warriors with two or more hits and two RBI's.

Begg finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's, two doubles and a run scored; Quirino Esquivel was 2-for-4 with two RBI's; Carlos Pino was 2-for-4 with a double and a run; and Martin was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run and a stolen base.

In game number two, Jose Santiago (1-0) pitched the opening 5.2 innings allowing seven hits and five runs, only two of which were earned.

Santiago, a right-handed pitcher from West Palm Beach, Florida, also recorded four strikeouts with two walks. Keon Cusic came on to earn his first career save, completing the final 1.1 innings giving up two hits and one run.

Webber scored six times in the bottom of the second inning in game two as Esquivel hit his first of two triples in the game down the right field line to score Pino before Balentien brought in Esquivel with an RBI, Rougie Odor singled to center to score two, and Carlo Mancillas singled up the middle to bring in two more runs.

Esquivel tripled to right center in the bottom of the fifth to score Mancillas and make it 7-3 Warriors, but Purdue Northwest got to within two at 7-5 in the sixth inning before back-to-back-to-back RBI-singles by Navarro, Begg and Mancillas in the bottom of the sixth made it 10-5.

Mancillas was 3-for-4 with three RBI's, a run and a steal in game two while Odor was 2-for-3 with two RBI's, two runs and a walk; Esquivel was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run; and Navarro was 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and his second stolen base of the day.

"It was nice seeing the two rookies pitch well," spoke Head Coach Brad Niethammer. "We are back to TSC play this weekend wrapping up a long two weeks of baseball."

Webber, which still has seven more consecutive home games to play, will return to Sun Conference action this weekend against Florida Memorial University before taking on No. 17 Keiser University the following weekend. The Warriors and the Lions will do battle in a single game starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 15, and will then play a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 16.
