No. 18 baseball swept by No. 1 Southeastern

LAKELAND, Fla. (February 9, 2019) – For the second time in two days, the No. 18 Webber International University baseball team fell victim to a walk off in the bottom of the ninth inning against No. 1 Southeastern University as the Warriors fell to the Fire 9-8 in game two of the three-game series before dropping the final game 14-5.

Despite the crazy outcomes in which the Warriors led in all three games of the series against the top-ranked team in the NAIA and the defending NAIA National Champions, the story of the weekend for Webber was transfer junior Willie Carter.

Carter homered in both games on Saturday, and drove in five RBI's on the day. Carter finished the series against the Fire with six hits in 13 at bats while adding seven total RBI's, three home runs and a double.

Carter's first homer on Saturday tied game two of the series at 3-3 in the top of the third, and then Webber tied it again and took the lead at 5-4 with two runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI-grounder by Rougie Odor scoring Luis Esteban and an RBI-single up the middle by Norberto Navarro bringing in Cristian Rivera.

Then, the Warriors looked like they would take control as Esteban smacked his first career home run in the fifth, a three-run shot to right to bring in Marcus Begg and Quinsly Balentien and make it 8-4 Warriors.

Unfortunately, Webber could not hold on to a late lead for the second game in a row as Southeastern's Dan Valerio hit a three-run shot of his own to left off of Gerig Blackman with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 8-7. It was an eerily similar feeling to the night before when the Fire put together a four-run rally with two outs in the eighth to stun the Warriors.

Then after a leadoff bunt single in the bottom of the ninth, Manuel Mesa, Southeastern's 2019 Avista NAIA World Series MVP and the man who homered in the eighth against the Warriors the night before, did it again with a homer to left off of John Shutrump (0-1) to once again defeat the Warriors on a walk off.

In the third and final game of the series, Carter got the scoring started with a two-run homer in the third inning to give Webber a 2-0 lead just like he did in the first inning on Friday.

However, the Southeastern bats were simply too powerful for the Warrior pitchers to keep at bay in game three as the Fire crossed the plate six times in the bottom of the fourth and added six more runs in the bottom of the eighth.

"It was a disappointing weekend," said Head Coach Brad Niethammer. "We played well enough to win two games, but we couldn't close the door. We will get back to work and improve on the things we need to."

Webber fell to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in The Sun Conference while Southeastern improved to 6-2 and 3-0.

Despite playing well for the much of the time against the Fire, it was a rough series overall for Webber, which will now have to take on another top team in the NAIA and its home ballpark. Webber will square off against No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett College for three games in three days starting on Friday, February 15, at 4 p.m. in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
