Game Recap: Baseball |

No. 18 baseball falls in three straight at No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (February 17, 2019) – The No. 18 Webber International University baseball team could not match up to No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett University as the Warriors were swept in the three-game series while allowing double-digit runs in all three outings and committing eight errors on the weekend. Webber fell 10-3 on Friday, February 15, and lost by scores of 11-7 and 11-1 on Saturday, February 16.

"It was not a good weekend of baseball," commented Head Coach Brad Niethammer. "We got overmatched and really didn't play up to our potential or play the type of baseball we expect to play. It's been a challenging stretch of games we have had over the last few weeks and we were not quite ready for that challenge. We will go back to work and keep getting better."

Game 1 (No. 18 Webber 3, No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett 10):
  • After two runs for the Grizzles in the bottom of the first inning, Webber actually led 3-2 after a three-run top of the fifth inning highlighted by a two-run double to left by Garrett Martin.
  • Unfortunately, the lead was short lived as Georgia Gwinnett responded with seven runs over the next two innings off of starter Zak Spivy (2-2) to take control.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Warriors loaded the bases with only one out on a walk by Martin and back-to-back singles past second base by Norberto Navarro and Willie Carter, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat.
  • In the top of the eighth, Webber again threatened by putting runners on first and second with one out before a fielder's choice put runners on first and third with two outs, but a groundout ended that half inning.
  • Navarro and Carlos Pino both finished with two hits while Carter, Luis Esteban, Quirino Esquivel and Martin added the Warriors' other knocks.

Game 2 (No. 18 Webber 7, No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett 11):
  • Webber led 3-0 after a solo home run to left in the first inning by Marcus Begg and a two-run shot to right in the second inning by Cristian Rivera scoring Norberto Navarro, but a six-run bottom of the third for Georgia Gwinnett off of starter Doug Pearl (0-2) again put the Warriors behind.
  • The Warriors made it a 6-4 deficit in the top of the fourth on an RBI-single by Carlo Mancillas scoring Carlos Pino, who led off the inning with a double to right center.
  • Webber then continued to try and chip away and made it a one-run game with a three-run top of the sixth inning highlighted by a two-run double to left center by Quirino Esquivel, but two more runs for the Grizzles in the next half inning off of Rey Rodriguez and another run in the bottom of the eighth against Gerig Blackman was all she wrote.
  • Pino finished with two doubles in the game while Rivera also had two hits including his home run. It was the second home run of the season for both Rivera and Begg.

Game 3 (No. 18 Webber 3, No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett 11):
Next Up: Webber will return home to the Heart of Florida Field in Babson Park, Florida, on Tuesday, February 19, to face the College of Saint Joseph out of Vermont in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
