Men’s basketball beats FMU 93-81

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 7, 2019) – The Webber International University men's basketball team came together for a nice 93-81 win over Florida Memorial University on Thursday night inside the FMU Wellness Center.

The Sun Conference's leader scorer in sophomore Tommie Luke did his thing, finishing with 28 points and 10 rebounds for the second game in a row for his second straight double-double. Luke did his damage on 9-of-16 shooting overall and a 9-of-11 mark from the free throw line, and he also added five assists and five steals.

Fellow sophomore Rasheem Etienne was next with 20 points on 70 percent shooting overall and a perfect 4-for-4 mark from the free throw line.

Senior Simon Fransis and junior Kevin Grace were the other two Warriors in double figures in scoring as Fransis finished with 12 points and Grace had 10.

Last but not least, sophomore Austin Evans matched Luke with 10 rebounds while also scoring six points, Malik Morrow added seven points, and Nicholas Toledo matched Evans with six points.

Webber led 46-42 at the half after shooting nearly 50 percent from the field overall and hitting four 3-pointers. In the second half, the Warriors somehow shot even better, converting on 54.84 percent of their attempts while adding three more 3-pointers and making 10-of-12 free throws to win the second half 47-39 and pull away at the end.

A 3-pointer by Grace four minutes into the second half put the Warriors ahead by double digits (61-51) for the first time in the game.

However, an 11-4 run for FMU got the margin down to three at 65-62 in favor of the Warriors with 11 minutes left; and then nearly six minutes later, the Lions got to within one at 76-75 after one of their 13 3-pointers on the game.

Fortunately, the Warriors answered with an and-one by Grace to go back ahead by four and then back-to-back 3-pointers by Etiennne made it a seven-point Warrior lead at 85-78 with just under three minutes left, capping a 9-3 Webber run.

The Warriors expanded the run to 13-3 after two free throws by Etienne followed by a dunk by Morrow with just 1:15 left, and then after a final 3-pointer by the Lions, two free throws each by Luke and Etienne finished it off as the Warriors earned a long overdue and much needed victory.

Webber improved to 12-15 overall and 3-12 in The Sun Conference, snapping a long seven-game TSC losing skid. Florida Memorial, meanwhile, fell to 5-22 overall and 3-12 in the TSC after previously earning two wins over its last four conference games.

The Warriors will now set their sights on their final two homes games of the season, starting on Saturday, February 9, at 2 p.m. against St. Thomas University and followed by Senior Night on Thursday, February 14, at 7:30 p.m. against Johnson & Wales University.
