No. 18 baseball earns first conference win over Ave Maria

AVE MARIA, Fla. (February 22, 2019) – Led by eight innings from its starting pitcher Zak Spivy, the No. 18 Webber International University baseball team earned its first Sun Conference win of the 2019 season with a 13-4 road victory over Ave Maria University on Friday.

The win improved Webber to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in the Sun Conference on the season, and it also represented the second 13-4 victory for the Warriors during their current three-game win streak. Ave Maria fell to 6-11 and 2-5 with the loss.

Spivy (3-2) struck out eight Gryenes over his eight innings, allowing seven hits and three runs with only one walk. It was Spivy's third outing lasting eight or more innings already this season, and it was also his second game with eight or more strikeouts in five starts. Joey Cutrone finished it off with the final inning of work, allowing one unearned run and one hit in what was his sixth appearance of the young season.

In addition to scoring 13 runs on 13 hits off of seven Ave Maria pitchers, 10 different Warriors recorded a hit on Friday while nine different players scored a run and seven had at least one RBI.

Marcus Begg was 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning that gave the Warriors a 3-0 advantage.

Willie Carter was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a triple that scored Norberto Navarro to make it 5-1 Webber in the fifth inning.

Carlo Mancillas was also 2-for-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored, including a two-run double bringing in Carlos Pino and Nolan Soliveres to make it 7-2 Warriors in the sixth.

In all, Webber would score four times in the sixth inning to push the lead to 9-2 as Cristian Rivera added an RBI-triple bringing in Mancillas and Garrett Martin finished it off with a sacrifice fly to score Rivera.

Navarro and Rivera both added two runs as four different Warriors scored twice while Navarro also added three walks, and Martin added three RBI's in all.

"It was good to get that first conference win," spoke Head Coach Brad Niethammer. "We are back at it early tomorrow."

Games two and three of the series between Webber and Ave Maria will start at 11 a.m. tomorrow on Saturday, February 23, as the Warriors look to try to get back to .500 in conference play with a sweep of the Gyrenes.
