No. 18 baseball sets program single-game scoring record against Gyrenes

AVE MARIA, Fla. (February 24, 2019) – The No. 18 Webber International University baseball team fell 6-5 after a walk off two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning during game one on Saturday at Bowie's Ballpark against Ave Maria University before bouncing back with a very high scoring 27-13 win during game two to win The Sun Conference series two games to one. During the game two win, Webber not only set its new program record for most runs in a game with 27, but the Warriors also set a new team record for hits in a game with 26 and tied their program record for triples in a game with three.

The 27 runs were the most since April 11, 1994, when Webber scored 25 times against Southeastern University, and the 26 hits where the most since the Warriors belted out 23 hits in a 21-0 win against Clearwater Christian College back on February 9, 2013.

In game two on Saturday, Webber would find itself behind 8-2 after three innings as Ave Maria put up six runs in a bottom half of the third inning that featured back-to-back home runs for the Gyrenes, their third and fourth home runs to that point out of seven total on the day for Ave Maria.

Webber, however, fought back with four runs in the top of the fourth inning on four RBI-singles to make it 8-6, and then the Warriors got to within two at 11-9 after three more runs in the top of the sixth inning via a three-run home run by senior Luis Esteban, his second home run out of three on the day.

Webber then took the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning with five runs, all of which came with two outs. After Nolan Soliveres hit a one-out triple to right center and Garrett Martin walked with two outs to put runners on first and third, Norberto Navarro doubled to center to bring in both runners, and then Marcus Begg smacked a double of his own to center to score Navarro and Willie Carter.

In all, the Warriors outscored Ave Maria 25-5 over the final six innings of the ballgame in game two.

Gerig Blackman (2-0) earned the win with three innings pitched allowing one run and three hits. Tyler Buchanan pitched the eighth inning allowing two runs, one hit and one walk while Joey Cutrone pitched the final inning allowing zero runs, one hit, one walk and a strikeout, which was good for his third straight appearance without allowing a run.

Before the walk off home run by Ave Maria in game one, the go-ahead run for Webber came in the top of the ninth as an error by the Gryenes' shortstop put Martin on second base with no outs, and then after a wild pitch moved Martin to third, he scored on a single up the middle by Navarro.

It was the second straight inning in which an error and a wild pitch came back to haunt the Gyrenes as Carlos Pino reached with one out on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a single by Esteban and scored on a knock by Carlo Mancillas to tie the game at 4-4.

Earlier in the game, it was Navarro who got things started off in the Warriors' favor with a leadoff home run on a 2-1 count. Webber then went ahead by a score of 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning after a two-out triple and a run on a wild pitch by Quirino Esquivel; and then in the top of the sixth, the first home run of the day by Esteban made it 3-1 Warriors before Ave Maria answered back with a three-run bottom half of the sixth to take a 4-3 advantage.

Webber is now 7-9 overall and 2-4 in The Sun Conference while Ave Maria moved to 7-12 and 3-6.

The Warriors will now return back to the friendly confines of the Heart of Florida Baseball Field for what will be a stretch of 21 straight home games stretching until March 27 against this very same Ave Maria squad. The exciting stretch of action in Babson Park, Florida, will kick off on Tuesday, February 26, as the Warriors host Judson University at 6 p.m.
