No. 18 Warriors get back to winning ways against Fighting Saints

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 19, 2019) – The No. 18 Webber International University baseball team combined for 27 runs, 24 hits and 13 extra base hits in its doubleheader sweep over the College of Saint Joseph (Vt.) on Tuesday at the Heart of Florida Field. The Warriors won game one 13-4 and then pitched a gem in game two, winning 14-0 on a combined two-hitter.

In addition to the stellar hitting numbers and pitching numbers the Warriors put up, one of the big stories of the day was junior Willie Carter, who yet again hit a home run in each game of a series, giving him eight home runs in 13 games played so far on the season.

Eight different Warriors recorded at least one hit in both games while the Warriors also had nine different players with a run and nine different players with an RBI in game one and seven different players with a run and seven with an RBI in game two.

In game one, Quirino Esquivel finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI; and Marcus Begg finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's, a double and a run. Cristian Rivera matched Begg with two RBI's while Norberto Navarro, Carter and Nolan Soliveres each matched Esquivel with two runs scored. In addition to Begg's double, Luis Esteban and Garrett Martin both recorded a double while Soliveres notched a triple and Carter smacked what was his seventh home run of the season at the time.

On the mound, Marcus Pritchard (1-1) earned his first win of the season in his first career start as a Warrior with zero runs and two hits allowed over four innings with seven strikeouts. Keon Cusic (0.2 innings, 2 strikeouts), Trent Massaro (0.1 innings, 1 strikeout) and Ricardo Garcia (2 innings, 3 strikeouts) combined to finish off the final three innings as the Warriors combined to strikeout 13 total batters and hold the Fighting Saints to only four hits.

In game two, Carter finished 4-for-4 with four runs, three RBI's and a home run; and Carlos Pino was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a triple. Carlo Mancillas matched Pino with two runs scored and Soliveres matched Carter with three RBI's while Begg added two RBI's. Begg, Pino, Soliveres and Rougie Odor all recorded a double while Mancillas matched Pino with a triple and Quinsly Balentien matched Carter with a homer, which was the first of the season for Balentien.

Tyler Buchanan (1-0) finished his start with a perfect four innings of zero runs, zero hits and zero walks with five strikeouts. Joey Cutrone (1 inning, 3 strikeouts), Rey Rodriguez (1 inning, 3 strikeouts) and Gerig Blackman (1 inning, 1 strikeout) finished it off as Webber allowed only two hits and no walks throughout the game with 12 combined strikeouts.

Webber improved to 5-8 on the season, snapping its eight-game losing skid, while Saint Joseph fell to 7-4.

"It was nice to see the guys relax and just play some baseball tonight," said Head Coach Brad Niethammer. "We will be ready to get back into TSC play this weekend."

Next up, Webber returns to Sun Conference action by traveling to Ave Maria University for a 2 p.m. game on Friday, February 22, followed by the series doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 23. In the first meeting between the Warriors and the Gyrenes this season on February 6, Ave Maria came out on top by one run at 7-6. The Gyrenes have already earned wins over No. 1 Southeastern University, No. 6 St. Thomas University and No. 18 Webber.
