Women’s basketball earns Senior Night win

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 14, 2019) – The Webber International University women's basketball team earned the season sweep over Johnson & Wales University with an 83-76 win over the Wildcats during the Warriors' Senior Night on Thursday evening inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

All three of Webber's seniors had solid games as Briana Williams scored 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three, Montrese Weller scored 10 points with eight rebounds, and Abby Unis scored four points.

Williams, a native of Dayton, Ohio, also added five rebounds and two assists. The 15 points were her most in a game since scoring 19 against Clarke University back on December 19, 2018. Williams has collected 193 points, 52 assists, 49 rebounds and 29 steals in her lone season as a Warrior this year, which currently spans 25 games.

Weller, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, also added three assists on Thursday. She has recorded 436 points, 143 rebounds and 55 assists in her two years at Webber.

Lastly, Unis, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has recorded 148 career points and 177 career boards in her two seasons as a Warrior.

Webber's leading scorer on the evening was sophomore Paris Copeland, who scored 20 points while adding a career-best six assists, five rebounds and two steals. Taniya Patrick recorded the ninth double-double of her freshman campaign, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks and three assists. Sophomore Dariah Bolden also added eight points on 4-of-8 shooting.

Head Women's Basketball Coach Grady Morrell said, "Our seniors came out and set the tone from the get go tonight, and the underclassmen performing well was just the icing on the cake."

The story of the game for Webber was a great first quarter in which Webber outscored Johnson & Wales by 10 and shot an epic 62.5 percent from the field overall. The Warriors made seven of their first nine shots of the game and started 2-for-2 from three while limiting the Wildcats to only a 2-for-10 start from the field.

In the second quarter, Webber went up by 13 at 30-17 after a 3-pointer by Williams just over a minute into the period; and then with 1:29 left before halftime, the Warriors went up by 17 at 44-27 after the fourth 3-pointer of the game to that point by Williams.

By the end of the first half in which Webber led by 14 at 44-30, the Warriors outrebounded Johnson & Wales 32-22 and outscored the Wildcats 8-2 in points off turnovers and 10-4 in second chance points.

In the second half, the Wildcats never got closer than within seven during either quarter, and Webber's largest lead of the contest came two and half minutes into the fourth quarter as a layup by Bolden made it a 19-point game at 71-52.

Webber improved to 10-15 overall and 5-12 in The Sun Conference while Johnson & Wales fell to 8-17 and 5-12. The win represented the first time all season the Warriors have won two straight games, and the win also ended the postseason hopes for Johnson & Wales.

Webber's season finale will come in two days on Saturday, February 16, in West Palm Beach, Florida, as the Warriors battle Keiser University at 2 p.m.
