WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (February 16, 2019) – The Webber International University women's basketball team fell by only three points in the final game of its 2018-19 campaign, falling to Keiser University 66-63 after a score with only three seconds left on Saturday in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Webber was led by a career-high in points from sophomore
LeAndra Franklin, who finished with 17 points while adding seven steals and a career-best five assists.
Next for the Warriors was freshman
Taniya Patrick recording her 10th double-double of the season and second straight double-double to end her rookie campaign as she finished with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting while adding 10 rebounds. She finished her first collegiate season ranked first in all of NAIA Division-II in blocks per game (3.1) and in total blocks (81). She was also top-21 in the country in field goal percentage (50.8 percent) and was top-41 in rebounds per game (8.3).
Playing in her final game as a Warrior on Saturday was senior
Montrese Weller, who scored 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting, the exact same shooting mark as sophomore
Paris Copeland, who scored eight points.
Webber's largest lead of the contest came in the second quarter as the Warriors jumped ahead by nine at 26-17 after a layup by Franklin and a 3-pointer by Weller to start the scoring in the period.
Webber then led by nine again at 39-30 at halftime after shooting 42.1 percent from the field over the first two quarters; but in the third quarter, the Warriors were outscored 16-5 as Keiser took a two-point lead at 46-44 into the final period.
Trailing by eight (58-50) with 6:37 left in the game, the Warriors fought all the way back with an 8-0 run to tie it with 3:39 to play.
The game was still tied at 63-63 with only 19 seconds left after two free throws by Franklin, but it was Keiser's Midori Long who connected on the game-winning two-point jumper with only three seconds remaining to steal the victory.
Unfortunately, the Warriors were unable to pull it out in the end despite holding the Seahawks to only 30 percent shooting in the second half and a percentage of only 33.3 percent overall.
One of the key differences in the second half was Keiser sinking three 3-pointers (3-10) while Webber was only 1-of-7 from three over the final 20 minutes.
"I thought we played well enough to win, but thought there were some things that did not go our way in the last five minutes that determined the outcome," spoke Head Coach
Grady Morrell.
Webber finished its 2018-19 season with an overall record of 10-16 and a Sun Conference mark of 5-13, while Keiser improved to 14-15 and 7-11 entering the postseason as the No. 6 seed in the conference.
