Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s basketball falls to undefeated Tigers in final seconds

BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 2, 2019) – Only four days after Thanksgiving, the Webber International University women's basketball team lost at home for the second time this season, taking undefeated Edward Waters College down to the wire but falling by one point, 60-59, on Monday evening inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

On an inbounds play from behind the basket with only 1.5 seconds left and Webber trailing by one, LeAndra Franklin inbounded the ball to Taniya Patrick inside the free throw line, but the shot rimmed out to end the game in heartbreaking fashion.

Down by five at halftime at 36-31, the Warriors came back to tie it at 36-36 after scoring each of the first five points of the second half on a layup by Franklin and an and-one by Patrick.

Then, with Webber down seven at 46-39 late in the third quarter following a 10-3 run for the Tigers, Franklin and the Warriors responded to get within one following a 9-3 Warrior run over the final minute and a half of the third quarter. All nine points during the run for Webber were scored by Fanklin, who added a long 3-pointer that was banked in at the buzzer to make it a one-point Warrior deficit at 49-48.

From there, the Warriors opened the fourth quarter by taking their first lead of the second half at 50-49 on a layup by Patrick only 11 seconds in. The Warriors then led by four at 53-49 following a layup by Breyonna Reed and a free throw by Patrick with 7:44 left to play, and then took back the lead again by one at 58-57 following a layup by Franklin with only 2:22 remaining.

In the final minute, a free throw by RayGene Garner put Webber ahead 59-58 with only 50 seconds to go, but then after two free throws by Edward Waters on its next possession to take the lead back, the Warriors were unable to find a way to answer one last time.

It was the Franklin and Patrick show for the home team in the second half as Franklin would go on to finish with a career-high 21 points while Patrick finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds for her second double-double in a row and third of the season.

Franklin finished shooting 70 percent (7-10) from the field, was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line and had four steals all while Patrick was 5-for-9 from the field, 8-for-12 from the free throw line and had four blocks.

Reed, Garner and Emmarrie Carmen each added six points as well while Reed also had four assists and Garner also had six rebounds.

Monday's contest saw 12 ties and nine lead changes between the two teams while Edward Waters forced 30 Webber turnovers and scored 22 points of them while also taking a 23-11 advantage on the offensive boards.

With the loss, Webber is now .500 overall on the season at 4-4 and is 3-2 at home while Edward Waters remained perfect on the year at 9-0 with four wins over teams from The Sun Conference.

Next up, Webber will return to Sun Conference action with a tough road contest at Southeastern University, the No. 2-ranked team in NAIA Division-II. Tipoff for the women's game will be at 7:30 p.m. on the evening of Thursday, December 5, inside the Furnace in Lakeland, Florida.
