BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 17, 2019) – The Webber International University men's basketball team started the Webber Christmas Shootout by earning its fourth victory in its last five regular-season games, defeating Truett-McConnell University 116-77 on Tuesday evening inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
It was also the beginning of a stretch of three games in four days for Webber (6-7 overall) and was the Warriors' third time reaching 100 or more points in regular-season action so far this year. For Truett-McConnell (6-7), it was the Bears' fifth defeat in a row and seventh in their last eight games after starting the season 5-0.
The 116 points scored represented the most points for the Warriors in a single game under their third-year Head Coach
Allen Corbin. The Warriors' previous single-game high under Coach Corbin came on December 11 of last season when Webber defeated Southeastern Baptist College 113-84 on the road in Laurel, Mississippi.
In addition to it being the third time this season Webber reached the 100-point mark in a regular-season game, the Warriors also made a season-high 19 3-pointers and set new season-highs in field goal percentage (.573), 3-point percentage (.543), assists (24) and steals (16). The Warriors also had a season-low nine turnovers.
The Warriors' sank five 3-pointers in the first 10:15 of the game to lead by nine at 27-18 after a three by
Rasheem Etienne.
After a 3-pointer by the Bears to get back to within six at 27-21 only 10 seconds later, Webber outscored Truett-McConnell 34-10 over the final 9:18 of the first half to lead by 30 at the break at 61-31 after the fourth 3-pointer of the opening 20 minutes by Etienne.
Earlier in the first half, Webber used a 14-0 run to take its first 20-point lead of the game at 41-21 with 6:12 remaining; and then the Warriors reached the 50-point mark in the game on a 3-pointer by
Ariel Watson to lead by 25 at 50-25 with four minutes to go in the half.
In all for the first half, Webber shot over 62 percent both from the field and from three while connecting on 10 3-pointers and going a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Four Warriors were already in double figures in scoring,
Javonni Quince already had seven of his career-high eight assists, and Webber was also doing its job defensively by holding the Bears to less than 29 percent shooting overall.
In the second half, Webber never led by less than 31 points and led by as much as 43 three times with over 10 minutes left in the game.
The Warriors reached the 100-point mark on a 3-pointer by
Kevaun Smith to make the score 102-65 with 5:25 left to play.
In all for the game, 13 different Warriors entered the scoring column while eight different players had at least one 3-pointer.
Etienne finished with a team-high 18 points for the Warriors on 6-of-8 shooting overall and a 4-of-5 mark from three. He also dished out three assists.
Tommie Luke and
Corey Corbin were both next with 17 points. Luke did his work on 7-of-9 shooting overall and a 3-for-3 mark from the free throw line while also adding four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Corbin, meanwhile, was 6-for-11 from the field and 3-for-4 from three while adding a team-high eight rebounds.
Watson added 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting overall, 3-of-4 shooting from three and a 3-for-3 mark from the free throw line. He also finished with a season-high four assists and a season-high four steals.
Jaylon Myles had 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field and 3-for-5 shooting from three to go along with four boards.
Jonathan Philistin had seven points, and Quince and Smith both finished with six points on two 3-pointers.
Last but not least,
Chetachukwu Oliver had six rebounds.
"I was really happy with the way we played tonight," spoke Coach Corbin. "Turett-MConnell is a talented team who is very well coached. We shared the ball extremely well and guys have been putting the work in to make shots. I hope we can continue to climb the ladder."
The Warriors' second game during the Webber Christmas Shootout will come tomorrow, Wednesday, December 18, as the Warriors battle the University of Northwestern Ohio at 5 p.m.
