Men’s basketball defeats Northwestern Ohio 98-72 for third straight win

BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 18, 2019) – The Webber International University men's basketball team beat the University of Northwestern Ohio 98-72 during day two of the Webber Christmas Shootout to earn what was its third win in a row and fifth victory in its last six regular-season games.

With the win, Webber got back to .500 overall on the season at 7-7 and improved to 3-0 in nonconference games played inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. Northwestern Ohio, meanwhile, fell to 2-12 overall with what was its 10th loss in a row.

Leading the way for the Warriors with an incredible shooting performance was Tommie Luke, who made his first seven shots of the game overall and then made his first seven 3-pointers of the game to explode for 31 points. It was his second time scoring 30 or more points so far in 2019-20.

Luke only missed two shots from the field all night as he was 12-of-14 overall and 7-of-8 from three. He also finished with a season-high four steals.

Jaylon Myles added 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting and also hit two 3-pointers. Myles was also very effective in other areas of the game as he also had six rebounds, five assists and three steals. In the end, he tied his career-highs in points, rebounds and assists.

Corey Corbin added 10 points on 50 percent shooting to go along with six rebounds and a career-high three blocked shots, and Javonni Quince finished with nine points on 7-for-8 shooting from the free throw line to go along with a game-high seven rebounds.

Rasheem Etienne added eight points and three assists, Ariel Watson and Joel Coffey both added six points and two blocks, and for the second game in a row, Chetachukwu Oliver finished with six rebounds.

To start the game, Webber led by 12 at 15-3 just over five minutes in on back-to-back fast break layups by Myles.

By halftime, both teams were shooting 50 percent from the field with the biggest difference in the game coming via 14 turnovers by the Racers and nine steals by the Warriors. Luke was already 5-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from long range to that moment with 13 points.

Somehow, Webber shot even better in the second half, finishing above 56 percent from the field while going 50 percent (8-16) from three.

To start the second half, Luke immediately hit a 3-pointer to put Webber ahead by 14 at 46-32, making him 6-for-6 from the field and 4-for-4 from three at that point.

Then, only four minutes into the second half, back-to-back 3-pointers by Luke, who was 6-for-6 from three at the time, made it a 20-point Warrior advantage at 58-38.

Luke then hit his seventh straight 3-pointer to start the contest to make it 68-41 with 14 minutes left.

Webber's largest lead of the game, a 31-point margin, came with two and a half minutes left when Etienne hit a 3-pointer of his own to make it 96-65.

A layup by Etienne 30 seconds later made it 98-68 as Webber had two minutes to try and reach the century mark for the second game in a row and fourth time this season but was unable to do so.

Head Men's Basketball Coach Allen Corbin said following the win, "I think we took another step up the ladder tonight. UNOH is a very tough program who runs good stuff. We guarded on the defensive end and we shared the ball on the offensive end. We had some tremendous individual efforts and we grew as a team. I am looking forward to Friday's matchup."

In two days, the final game of the Webber Christmas Shootout will see the Warriors' men's basketball team host Taylor University at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 20, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center as the Warriors look to go into Christmas Break on a four-game winning streak.
