Women’s basketball beats Florida College by 30 in 2019-20 home opener

BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 9, 2019) – The 2019-20 home opener for the Webber International University women's basketball team featured a great effort on both sides of the ball from the home team as the Warriors raced to a 76-46 victory over Florida College inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

In addition to winning by 30, Webber also outrebounded Florida College by 30 at 61-31, dominated in points in the paint at 44-20 and never trailed in the contest.

The Warriors' biggest first-quarter lead came by 16 points at 26-10 with only 30 seconds left in the period.

After only one quarter, Webber led 26-11 after shooting 66.7 percent (10-15) from the field; and then in the second quarter, the Warriors held the Falcons to only 17.6 percent shooting (3-17) from the field.

Each of the Warriors' first seven baskets of the game were assisted on, and then that trend continued with assists on nine of Webber's 10 field goals in the first quarter and 13 of 16 in the first half. By the end of the game, 23 of Webber's 29 field goals were assisted on.

Overall, Webber shot over 44 percent from the field and over 40 percent from three in both halves to finish at 46.8 percent (29-62) overall and 40 percent exactly (6-15) from three, all while limiting Florida College to under 26 percent shooting in both halves and only a percentage of 17.2 percent (5-29) from three for the game.

Three different Warriors were only two rebounds or less from a double-double as Taniya Patrick led the way with 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting and added eight rebounds.

Patrick was followed by RayGene Garner with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting to go along with eight rebounds while Emmarrie Carmen had 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting overall and 3-of-5 shooting from three and also had nine rebounds.

The fourth Warrior to nearly reach-double-digits in rebounding was Thalia Jackson with a career-high nine boards and four points.

Breyonna Reed added six points, five rebounds and four assists; Selena Rodriguez had a career-best six points; and LeAndra Franklin had five points and a career-high seven assists.

Despite all of the positives, the Warriors still committed 28 turnovers as a team compared to only 17 for the opposition, something Head Coach Grady Morrell was sure to address following the game, "If we want to get to the next level as a team and be as good as we should be, we need to clean up our turnovers and learn to protect the basketball."

Webber will continue its four-game home stand with a matchup against Trinity College (Fla.) at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
