BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 8, 2019) – The Webber International University women's basketball team battled tough against NCAA Division-I Florida Gulf Coast University on the night of Thursday, November 7, but in the end, the Warriors fell 99-48 and are now set to make their first appearance at home during the 2019-20 season.
Against FGCU,
Emmarrie Carmen led Webber with nine points and seven rebounds and was followed by
Taniya Patrick with eight points and four blocks,
LeAndra Franklin with seven points and three steals, and
Breyonna Reed and
Amaya Lasley both with six points.
RayGene Garner also added five points and six rebounds.
The first home game of the year for Webber will also be the start of a four-game home stand for the Warriors inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. It all starts tomorrow evening on Saturday, November 9, as the Warriors host Florida College at 5:30 p.m.
"I am excited for our first home game of the 2019-20 season because I want our girls to understand that it is super important to protect where we practice and where we live," said Head Coach
Grady Morrell. "We need great energy from the home crowd to start off strong, and I believe we will give them a great show."
Following the home opener against the Falcons, Webber will host Trinity College (Fla.) three days later at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, before opening up Sun Conference play at home against Keiser University at 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 16.
The Warriors will then wrap up the home stand with another Sun Conference game as Webber hosts Florida Memorial University at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 21.
Webber women's basketball, which is currently 1-1 overall on the season with an 80-75 victory over NAIA Division-I Tougaloo College (Miss.) in its season opener, played very well against the No. 13-ranked team in NAIA D-I, Talladega College, in its second game of the season before falling 78-60.
Through two games, senior guard
Breyonna Reed and junior guard
LeAndra Franklin currently lead the Warriors in scoring at 15.5 and 15.0 points per contest, respectively.
Senior
RayGene Garner is next in scoring at 8.5 points per game while she also leads the team with 7.5 rebounds per contest.
Additionally, Franklin is second on the team in rebounds at six per game and is second in steals at 2.5 per game.
