BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 8, 2019) – The Webber International University men's basketball team earned the first win of its 2019-20 season as the Warriors rolled to a 101-66 victory over Trinity College (Fla.) during Webber's home opener inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
It was the second home opening win in three tries for the Webber men's basketball team (1-4) under its third-year Head Coach
Allen Corbin.
Leading the way with 20 points and nine rebounds was
Corey Corbin, who did his damage on 60 percent shooting (6-10) from the field and 2-for-3 shooting from behind the 3-point line. It was the third game with double-digit points and nine boards for Corbin in five games already in 2019-20.
Next was
Javonni Quince with his first double-double of the season as he recorded 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field and a 4-of-5 mark from the three and added 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals. It was a career-high in points, rebounds, assists, steals, field goals made and 3-pointers for the freshman from West Palm Beach, Florida.
The other two Warriors in double-digits in scoring were
Tommie Luke with 17 points on 50 percent shooting (7-14) from the field and
Kevin Grace with a season-high 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting overall and a 2-of-3 mark from 3-point range.
Similarly to Corbin, finishing only one rebound shy of double-digits was
Joel Coffey, who had eight points on 4-of-6 shooting, nine boards and a very impressive seven blocks.
Other strong stat lines for the Warriors were
Jaylon Myles with eight points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals;
Rasheem Etienne with six points, three rebounds and three assists;
Herman Robinson with five points, five rebounds and three assists; and
Malik Morrow with four points and seven boards.
After shooting 53.8 percent (21-39) from the field in the first half, the Warriors finished the game shooting 48.1 percent (38-79) while also sinking 11 3-pointers.
The Warriors' largest lead in the first half was 22 points when Corbin banked in a 3-pointer with time expiring to make it 54-32; and then in the second half Webber led by as much as 32 multiple times before reaching the 100-point mark and winning by 35 on a 3-pointer by Quince again with the clock expiring.
"It's great to finally get a 'W'", spoke Coach Corbin. "I thought we improved on some things that we worked on this week, and I love the way we shared the ball and played unselfishly tonight. We must continue to improve on the defensive end. I was also very happy to see a good crowd, and I hope we continue to fill the Sabbagh Center this year."
It was the second game in a row the Warriors have scored 100 or more points and was the sixth time in the last two seasons under Coach Corbin. Webber was 4-0 when scoring 100-plus points in 2018-19 with the last occasion coming in a 100-77 win on January 21, 2019, at home against Trinity Baptist College.
The Warriors will now hit the road for back-to-back games on back-to-back days in Pensacola, Florida. Webber will first battle Pensacola Christian College at 8:30 P.M. Eastern Standard Time / 7:30 P.M. Central Standard Time on Tuesday, November 12, looking for its second win in a row, and then the next day the Warriors will play an exhibition game at NCAA Division-II the University of West Florida at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13.
