WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 26, 2019) – With one win over an NCAA Division-II school already under its belt during the 2019-20 season, the Webber International University men's basketball team played well and only trailed by three at the half at Rollins College before falling by a final score of 101-87 on Tuesday night inside Warden Arena.
Early in the first half, Webber led 7-0 after each of the first five points of the game were scored by
Tommie Luke and
Joel Coffey added a basket to make it a touchdown lead.
After the first points of the game by Rollins, a 3-pointer by
Ariel Watson put the Warriors up by eight at 10-2.
The Tars, however, answered with an 8-0 run to tie it at 10-10, but then
Corey Corbin put the Warriors up by three at 13-10 following a desperation 3-pointer from well behind the line to beat the shot clock.
Unfortunately, Rollins then scored the next 11 points to make it a 19-3 run overall and put the Tars up 21-13 nine minutes into the game.
Down 31-21, Webber used a big 11-3 run featuring nine points by
Kevin Grace to get back to within two at 34-32, and then the Warriors tied it at 36-36 with 3:45 left before halftime on four straight points by Luke.
Luke continued his onslaught and stretched his streak to eight points in a row to make it only a one-point deficit for Webber at 41-40 with 2:45 left in the half, and then a tip-in by Coffey with just under a minute left made it 44-44 before the Tars closed the half on another 3-pointer.
Luke already had 13 points at the half on 5-of-10 shooting from the field.
In total for the first half, Rollins made 10 3-pointers and shot both 50 percent from the field and from three during the opening 20 minutes while Webber shot 53.1 percent (17-32) from the field in the first half and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
In addition to good free throw shooting, the Warriors also had a strong showing on the glass, outrebounding the Tars 18-13 in the first half to help keep it close.
Two minutes and 45 seconds into the second half, a second 3-pointer by Watson made it a 54-52 lead for Rollins.
Unfortunately, after another score by Luke kept Webber within four at 60-56 with 15 minutes left to play, Rollins took control for good and expanded its lead to 13 at 76-63 three minutes later before leading by 17 four times in the final 10 minutes.
In the end, Rollins sank 18 3-pointers and shot over 54 percent both from the field and from three.
The Warriors did, however, shoot 81.8 (18-22) from the free throw line.
Luke finished with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Corbin added 15 points on 60 percent shooting, and Watson and Grace both finished with 12 points while Watson also had a team-high seven rebounds.
"We had a good start and executed early," said Head Coach
Allen Corbin. "However, the second half was a totally different story. I'm excited for the guys to get home with family and be able to take a break."
After the Thanksgiving Holiday, the Warriors will return to regular-season action with a nonconference game at home inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center vs. Carolina Christian College at 5 p.m. on December 3.
