Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s basketball upsets nationally-recognized Southeastern

LAKELAND, Fla. (December 5, 2019) – The Webber International University men's basketball team won for the second time in two road games during Sun Conference play so far this season, upsetting nationally-recognized Southeastern University 83-76 on Thursday evening inside the Furnace in Lakeland, Florida. It was the first win for the Warriors over the Fire during the tenure of third-year Head Coach Allen Corbin.

Webber improved to 4-6 overall on the season and 2-2 in The Sun Conference while Southeastern fell to 7-3 and suffered its first Sun Conference loss of the year at 3-1.

The win for the Warriors also snaps a four-game losing streak in the series with Southeastern after Webber was swept by the Fire during each of the past two years.

Both of Southeastern's previous two losses this season came against nationally-ranked teams or teams receiving votes in the NAIA Division-II National Coaches' Poll.

Coach Corbin spoke following the win, "Our guys showed a lot of girt, toughness and relentlessness tonight. I have been waiting for that for an eternity it seems, but I am very proud of the guys' effort and execution down the stretch."

The game was decided over the final two minutes of action, which saw Webber outscore Southeastern 9-0 during the final 120 seconds.

After a layup from Corey Corbin tied the game at 76-76 with 1:41 remaining, the Warriors took the lead for good on a steal by Corbin and a fast break layup with a tough finish by Tommie Luke to make it 78-76 Warriors with 1:07 on the clock.

With only 20 seconds left, a step-back 3-pointer by Corbin made it 81-76 to all but seal the win, and then Ariel Watson salted it away with two free throws with 10.8 seconds left.

Earlier in the game, Corbin was the man who helped the Warriors stay in it.

The junior from Seaford, Delaware, closed the first half strong by scoring each of Webber's final seven points during the final 1:18 of the period to keep the Warriors within seven at 44-37, and then early in the second half Corbin had a steal and a layup to make it only a five-point game at 46-41.

Then, Webber got to within two at 46-44 on a 3-pointer by Kevin Grace, but unfortunately the Fire responded with a 9-0 run to jump ahead by double digits at 55-44 before Corbin stopped the run with another layup.

With under 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Warriors got the deficit back down to two possessions at 62-56 following another three by Grace and an and-one by Javonni Quince.

Then, after Webber fell back behind by 12 at 68-56, that is where things got really exciting as Webber got to within one at 70-69 on three straight 3-pointers by Watson, the last two of which were assisted by Quince, with just under five minutes left to play.

The Warriors then took their first lead of the second half at 71-70 on a defensive rebound coast-to-coast layup by Luke before going ahead by four at 74-70 with a little over four minutes left on yet another 3-pointer by Watson.

In all, it was an 18-2 run for the Warriors to come from down 12 to up four before needing to come back again to tie the game and win it in the final two minutes.

Leading Webber in scoring was Corbin with 25 points on 10 made field goals, eight rebounds and five steals.

Next in scoring was Watson with 18 points on four 3-pointers. Watson also shot 50 percent from three and matched Corbin with a team-high eight boards.

Luke was the third Warrior in double digits in scoring as he finished with 16 points and had seven rebounds.

Grace added nine points on three 3-pointers, and Jaylon Myles had eight points while Quince had seven points, six rebounds and a team-high three assists.

Next up in only two days, the Warriors will look to take down another team on the national radar as Webber hosts the No. 13-ranked team in NAIA Division-II, Ave Maria University, at 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center in Babson Park, Florida.
