Women’s volleyball battles St. Thomas to four sets

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (November 2, 2019) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team suffered another road loss in Sun Conference play on Saturday, falling 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 22-25, 25-10) at St. Thomas University during the Bobcats' Senior Day inside the Fernandez Family Center.

Laura Embry led the Warriors by recording her third double-double of the season as she finished with 18 assists and 14 digs. It was also the second double-double of the season for Embry against St. Thomas this season while Brianda Valdez recorded double-digit assists against the Bobcats for the second time this year as well by finishing with 11 helpers.

In kills, Svenja Koenig led the way for the Warriors with 11 kills while Kalameli Matautia added nine kills, Madelyn Glouner had five and Salla Rautiainen and Samantha Davila both had four. Davila also hit .375 percent for the match while the double-digit kills for Koenig was the second time so far this season she has accomplished that feat.

One key difference between Saturday's match and the first meeting between Webber and St. Thomas, which was back on September 28 when the Warriors earned the 3-0 sweep at home, was that of service aces. The Warriors finished with nine service aces compared to five for the Bobcats in that first meeting, but those numbers were flipped this time around as Glouner accounted for four of Webber's five aces.

Webber is now 7-17 overall and 3-11 in The Sun Conference on the season while St. Thomas is 12-13 and 8-7. The loss also snapped a streak of five consecutive wins for the Warriors over the Bobcats.

Next up for Webber women's volleyball will be its final road match of the season as the Warriors travel to Brunswick, Georgia, to take on the preseason favorite in The Sun Conference, the College of Coastal Georgia. The match is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6.
