LAKELAND, Fla. (November 2, 2019) – With its 39-14 loss at No. 18 Southeastern University on Saturday night on Victory Field, the Webber International University football team fell to 0-4 during its 2019 season against nationally-ranked teams in the NAIA.
It was also the Warriors' final road game of the 2019 season as Webber fell to 3-5 overall and dropped below .500 in the Mid-South Conference Sun Division at 2-3 after starting 2-0 in divisional games. Webber finished only 1-4 on the road in 2019 while Southeastern, meanwhile, improved to 7-1 overall, 4-1 in the MSC Sun Division and 5-0 at home.
On a positive note for Webber, sophomore
Davonte Williams had another insane performance. Although he is a running back, the Tampa, Florida, native finished with 10 catches for 127 yards, rushed 11 times for 59 yards and was 6-for-6 passing out of the wildcat formation.
Williams, who entered the weekend ranking top-20 in the NAIA in all-purpose yards, finished with 36 passing yards and had a three-yard touchdown pass to normal quarterback
Brycen Lee to make the score 19-7 with 8:39 left in the second quarter.
Lee finished 24-of-35 through the air for 340 yards and a passing touchdown of his own in the fourth quarter. That touchdown was a big 65-yard pass from Lee to
Kadarrius Carley to make the score 32-14 with 9:05 left to play.
It was the second 340-yard plus passing game of the season for Lee, who also completed over 68 percent of his passes for the third time.
For Williams, it was his second game of the year with at least 120 receiving yards and was his fourth game with at least 150 combined rushing and receiving yards.
Other big performances for the Warriors offensively came from
Jeremiah Lucas with six catches for 64 yards,
Gerard Williams III also with six catches for 52 yards to go along with 19 rushing yards on five attempts,
Christian Acevedo with four catches for 51 yards, and
Frederick Curry Jr. with two grabs for 14 yards.
Although seven different Warriors caught at least one pass on Saturday, Southeastern completed passes to eight different players by halftime and finished with nine players making at least one grab overall.
Another positive for Webber was the 409 yards of total offense, but unfortunately the Warriors were unable to convert many scores while Southeastern racked up 194 rushing yards compared to only 33 yards on the ground for Webber.
Despite Webber out-possessing Southeastern by two and half minutes offensively, the Warriors were also victims of three interceptions and five sacks from the Fire defense.
For the Warrior defense,
Colton Cormier led the way with eight tackles,
Tykevias Bailey had seven tackles and one tackle for loss,
Danterius Ghant has seven tackles,
Travonte Haynie and
Javaris Hendricks both had six tackles, and
Brandon Bell and
Nathan Johnson both had five tackles.
Next up, Webber's 2019 Senior Day, which also marks the end of the regular season, will now take place at 12 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, against rival Warner University on the new Warrior Turf Field.
