Warriors defeated by rival Royals during Senior Day overtime battle

BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 16, 2019) – The most recent edition of the Lake Caloosa Clash between Webber International University football and Warner University featured a wild game that required overtime to decide a winner, but in the end, the hometown Warriors fell to the visiting Royals by a score of 23-20 to finish off their 2019 campaign.

The seniors recognized before kickoff who received the opportunity to play their rival Warner for their final game were No. 1 Christian Acevedo, No. 4 James Mallory, No. 6 Timothy Miller, No. 11 Brycen Lee, No. 18 Christian Quezada, No. 20 Alexander Blackmore, No. 23 Brandon Bell, No. 28 Nathan Johnson, No. 42 Amin Gilbert, No. 51 Jimmy Pierre, No. 56 Jimmie Harper, No. 70 Tyler Roden, No. 74 Luke McHardy, No. 81 Bryce Briggs-Pierre, and No. 88 Ricardo Dormestoir.

Down 13-0 late in the third quarter, Webber scored 20 unanswered points to take the lead at 20-13 and seemingly take control of the contest.

The Warriors' first score of the day came after an interception by Trent Peacock to stop the Royals in Webber territory and lead to a big eight-play, 82-yard drive that started with 5:54 left in the third quarter and ended with a one-yard touchdown run by redshirt quarterback Cody Braden with 2:11 on the clock. The big play of the drive was a 45-yard pass from Braden to Jeremiah Lucas to get the Warriors all the way down to the Royals' one-yard line and set up the touchdown run by Braden one play later to make the score 13-6.

Then, after an interception by Travonte Haynie less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, Webber seized its momentum by capitalizing with back to-back huge touchdown passes to tie the game and then take the lead.

The first long score for Webber early in the fourth quarter was a 76-yard touchdown pass from Braden to Kadarrius Carley to tie the game at 13-13 with 12:17 left; and then after yet another turnover gained by Haynie on a fumble, the second early fourth-quarter score for Webber was a 75-yard touchdown pass from Braden to Christopher J. Williams to put the Warriors ahead 20-13 with 10:09 left in the game.

From there, Warner responded with a nine-play, 55-yard drive and tied the game at 20-20 with a three-yard rush with 3:38 left. The touchdown was by Javon Wilson, who earlier in the game became the first Royals' 1,000-yard rusher in school history.

If the buildup was not enough, the final four minutes of regulation were very interesting as well as after the Warriors blocked a punt by the Royals from Warner's own 10-yard line and came up with the ball only 20 yards away from the end zone, Webber was unable to pick up a first down and then missed the go-ahead field goal kick from 37 yards out with 1:17 on the clock.

Warner, after getting the ball back after the missed field goal, nearly marched the ball all the way down field to win it with a six-play, 61-yard drive that was fortunately stopped at Webber's own 19-yard line on an incredible interception by Haynie on an attempted spike by the Royals with only 11 seconds left.

It was an incredible action-packed game with both teams having an opportunity to win, but unfortunately to start the overtime period the Warriors were unable to score as a rush attempt by Carley on fourth down and long was snuffed out by the Warner defense.

The Royals then took advantage of the stop and ultimately connected on a 23-yard field goal from Santiago Tovar for the win.

Earlier in the game, the first touchdown for either team was a defensive score by the Royals after a snap by Webber from its own eight-yard line went over the head of Braden and into the end zone where Warner recovered it for six points.

In all, it was a sloppy first half that had six combined interceptions and fumbles lost as both teams threw a pick to start the game and then had two fumbles lost throughout the opening 30 minutes.

By the end of the game, Webber intercepted Warner four times and took the ball away from the Royals via a fumble three times, but it still would not be enough as the Warriors were outgained by the Royals 589-352 in total yards and 354-29 in yards on the ground. Warner also had 34 first downs compared to only 14 for Webber.

Webber did out-pass Warner 323 yards to 235 yards, but was only 3-of-12 on third down, was 0-for-3 on fourth down and was 1-for-4 in the red zone while missing both one field goal and one point after attempt. Warner, meanwhile, was 6-of-17 on third down, 4-of-6 on fourth down and 3-of-7 in the red zone.

Statistically for Webber, Braden led the offense with 311 passing yards with 17 completions on 25 attempts. He had three total touchdowns, two through the air and one on the ground.

Catching the ball from Braden was Davonte Williams with seven catches for 37 yards, Lucas with four grabs for 68 yards, C. J. Williams with two catches for 95 yards, Frederick Curry Jr. with three catches for 17 yards and Gerard Williams III with two catches for 30 yards.

Defensively, Webber was paced by Amin Gilbert with 10 total tackles and one tackle for loss; Haynie with nine tackles, two interceptions and one fumble recovered; Javaris Hendricks with eight tackles; Kevin Murphy with seven tackles and a fumble recovery of his own; and Brandon Bell, Nathan Johnson, Tykevias Bailey and Johnny Hernandez all with five tackles.

Junior Joe Ebel punted six times for 239 yards while putting two punts inside Warner's 20-yard line. He averaged 39.8 yards per punt with a long of 63 yards.

Webber finished its 2019 season 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the Mid-South Conference Sun Division while Warner improved to 3-7 and 2-4. The game also marked the end of Webber's third season competing in the MSC Sun Division after the Warriors had previously earned three Sun Division wins during each of their first two years in their new conference.

Additionally, Webber is now only 4-3 all-time against Warner as it is the Royals who will now get to hold on to the Lake Caloosa trophy for the year.
