BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 16, 2019) – The Webber International University women's basketball team scored 49 of its 69 points in the second half to rally and come back to defeat Keiser University 69-61 at home on Saturday.
In what was the 2019-20 Sun Conference opener for both teams, Webber improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the TSC so far during the young season while Keiser fell to 3-2 and 0-1. It was also the first win for the Warriors over the Seahawks since the first meeting between the two teams back during the 2017-18 campaign in January 2018.
In this meeting, Webber trailed 33-20 at halftime after shooting under 23 percent from the field in the half with only one make from 3-point range while allowing Keiser to shoot a blistering 53.3 percent (8-15) in the first quarter and then giving up three 3-pointers in the second.
However, in the second half, Webber shot 52.6 percent (10-19) from the field in the third quarter and finished the second half shooting 50 percent exactly (18-36).
After Webber outscored the Seahawks 8-3 during the opening 3:22 of the third quarter, getting to within eight points of the lead at 36-28, the Warriors then closed the quarter on a 15-6 spurt to trail the Seahawks by only five at 48-43.
Following layups by both teams to start the fourth quarter,
Breyonna Reed hit a big 3-pointer to get Webber to within two at 50-48 with 9:06 left to play.
Then, late in the final quarter, Webber took over with a 13-0 run to claim their first lead of the contest at 63-58 with 1:29 remaining. That started an even bigger 19-1 run that gave the Warriors their largest lead of the game at 69-59 with 25 seconds to go.
Each of the Warriors' six points over the final 47 seconds of the contest were free throws by
LeAndra Franklin to close out the big victory.
Webber's Head Coach
Grady Morrell said after the game, "Our keys to victory in this game were simple, defensive intensity and offensive execution. I firmly believe that our defense made the difference when it counted in the second half."
The Warriors took advantage of 26 Seahawk turnovers and had 13 steals as a team, which helped give the Warriors a 24-7 advantage in points off turnovers. Webber also outscored Keiser 44-26 in points in the paint and 18-4 in fast break points.
Leading both teams in scoring were Reed and Franklin with 15 points each. Reed also had six assists, five steals and five rebounds while Franklin added five assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Next was
Emmarrie Carmen with 14 points and seven rebounds while
Taniya Patrick recorded the first double-double of her sophomore season with 10 points and 10 boards while also adding two blocks and two steals.
RayGene Garner and
Samantha Pacheco each added five points as well while
Amaya Lasley also had six rebounds.
Next up, Webber will look to close out its current four-game home stand undefeated at home as the Warriors host the Lions of Florida Memorial University at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 21, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. FMU, which is currently 2-4 overall in 2019-20 and 0-1 in The Sun Conference, has not lost to the Warriors since 2016-17, a stretch spanning five games.
