Women’s soccer suffers shutout loss at home against Warner

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 5, 2019) – Coming off a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory in its last meeting with Crooked Lake rival Warner University back on September 10, the Webber International University women's soccer team had no such magic this time around as the Warriors fell to the Royals by a close score of 1-0 on Saturday morning on the Warrior Soccer Field.

The lone goal of the match came only three and a half minutes into the second half on a beautiful run by Maddie Manzke on an assist from Denise Ortiz.

After Webber was outshot 8-4 in the first half, the Warriors tried to answer Warner's goal early in the second half by outshooting the Royals 8-3 after that point.

Angelina Conde had a shot saved in the 52nd minute, and then Leah Borders shot high in both the 54th and 61st minutes.

Then, after a header attempt by Borders was saved in the 73rd minute, the Warriors had four near chances to score over the final seven minutes while Warner's goalkeeper, Mackenzie Spurling, made three tremendous saves to finish off the shutout.

The first was a save on a shot by Malia Domingo in the 84th minute, and then after a shot by Sienna Scully was blocked in the 86th minute, Spurling saved a shot by Hannah Vigotty in the 88th minute and saved an absolutely lovely shot by Kelcee Jackson with only 30 seconds remaining.

Spurling played all 90 minutes for the Royals in goal earning her first collegiate victory and first shutout all while finishing with a career-high seven saves.

For Webber offensively, Borders and Megan Warner both finished with a match-high three shots while Vigotty had two and four other Warriors had one, but Webber could just not get one into the back of the goal.

After a first-half shutout by Webber's starting goalkeeper, Natalie Bartek, throughout the first 45 minutes, Cameron Laine (2-3-1) came on in the second half and let up the lone goal before stopping two other near scoring chances by the Royals. Bartek then came back into the match to keep Webber within reach, and ultimately she finished with eight saves.

With the disappointing loss, Webber fell to 4-3-1 overall on the season and dropped to 1-3 in The Sun Conference while Warner (2-7, 1-2 TSC) earned what was only its second win of the season overall and first conference win of the year.

Webber will now face a very tough test at home against the No. 4-ranked team in the NAIA, Southeastern University, at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9. A week ago from Saturday, the Warriors squared off against the No. 1-ranked team in the NAIA in Keiser University at home and fell by a score of 7-0.
