FAULKNER, Ala. (October 12, 2019) – It was the
Davonte Williams show on Saturday as the sophomore running back from Tampa, Florida, caught the game winning touchdown pass from senior
Brycen Lee with only 18 seconds remaining to send the Webber International University football team to a 34-31 victory over Faulkner University (Ala.) in front of a crowd of 1,000-plus on Saturday at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium.
Down 24-12 in the fourth quarter, the Warriors began the comeback effort with a huge eight-play, 95-yard scoring drive that featured three passes from Lee to Williams for over 19 yards before Lee hooked up with
Jeremiah Lucas for a 20-yard score.
The extra point was then added by offensive lineman
Elijah Smith to make it 24-19 with under nine minutes left to play.
Then, following a quick three-and-out by Faulkner forced by the Warriors' defense, Lee unfortunately threw what was his third interception of the game, setting Faulkner up for a 14-yard touchdown pass on its first play following the turnover to make it a two-score margin again at 31-19 with only six and a half minutes remaining.
Lee, Williams, and the rest of the Warriors' offense, however, refused to quit as Webber again marched down the field on its next possession for another big scoring drive, this one a 10-play, 67-yard drive that featured seven completed passes by Lee, including a conversion to Williams on fourth-and-two around midfield, and was finished off with a one-yard pass from Lee to Williams for the touchdown.
Smith again added the extra point to yet again make it a five-point margin, this time at 31-26 with under four minutes to go.
With zero timeouts remaining, Webber elected to kick off to Faulkner and force the Eagles to get a couple of first downs to ice the game instead of going for an onside kick.
With Faulkner starting off at its own 28-yard line, the decision for the Warriors to kick off paid off bigtime as a great open-field tackle on second down by
Brandon Bell followed by another tackle by Bell on third down stopped the Eagles in their tracks.
After the third punt of the final quarter by Faulkner, Webber started its final drive of the game at its own 31-yard line with less than a minute on the clock. Simply put, it was six points or bust for the Warriors.
The game-winning drive started with a first down pass from Lee to Williams for 12 yards on second-and-10.
Then, following a five-yard pass from Lee to
Timothy Miller, the Warriors faced third-down-and-five from their own 48-yard line.
That is where the magic happened as Lee threw way downfield and found Williams for the 52-yard, game winning score to break Faulkner's back.
The Warriors added the two-point conversion on a pass from Lee to
Bryce Briggs-Pierre as Webber took what was its first lead of the entire game with only 18.5 seconds left.
In all, it was a 22-point fourth quarter for the Warriors.
"This game was a statement of 'Ubuntu', I am because we are." That was all Head Coach
Kelly Scott had to say following the comeback victory that moved Webber to 3-2 overall on the season and to 2-0 in the Mid-South Conference Sun Division. Faulkner, meanwhile, saw its record drop to 2-3 and 0-2.
Lee finished the game 26-of-46 passing for a season-high 381 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, but it was Williams who was a reliable target all game long en route to finishing with an incredible 213 receiving yards on 13 catches, both of which were career highs.
Williams' two receiving touchdowns combined with his five-yard touchdown on the ground back in the second quarter gave him a combined three scores and a combined 253 yards of total offense.
In addition to Williams catching the passes from Lee was Miller with seven catches for 74 yards and Lucas with four grabs for 60 yards and a score.
The Warriors' defensive effort, which stiffened up effectively in the second half, was led by
Colton Cormier with nine tackles, Bell with eight tackles,
Javaris Hendricks and
Amin Gilbert each with six tackles,
Travonte Haynie with five tackles and a forced fumble, and
Chandler Kerr also with a forced fumble.
After Webber trailed 17-12 at the intermission, the Warrior defense had already given up 364 total yards of offense while the Warriors' offense had half as many first downs as Faulkner (14-7) and was out-possessed by over 10 minutes.
That all changed in the second half as the Webber defense kept the Eagles under 100 yards of offensive over the final 30 minutes.
Webber's first touchdown of the game came in interesting and exciting fashion as
Rashaud Freeman returned a short punt 62 yards to the house on the second play of the second quarter.
Webber football will remain on the road for another MSC Sun Division matchup as the Warriors battle Ave Maria University at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, in Ave Maria, Florida. The following weekend on October 26, Webber will welcome No. 19 Keiser University into Babson Park, Florida, for the second ever varsity football game to be played on the new Warrior Turf Field.
