BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 30, 2019) – The final home match of the 2019 season for the Webber International University women's soccer team was a disappointing one as the Warriors lost 3-0 against the University of South Carolina Beaufort on the new Warrior Turf Field.
Despite being outshot 11-4 in the first half and 20-12 overall, the Warriors finished with nine shots on goal, only one shot on goal behind the Sand Sharks with 10.
Webber was led in shots by junior
Leah Borders with three on goal, fellow-junior
Angelina Conde with three total shots and two on goal, and senior
Megan Warner with two shots on goal.
Other shots on goal for the Warriors came from defenders
Harlie Ford and
Hannah Vigotty while
Emilie Velez and
Alyssa Rivera also had shot attempts not on goal.
Each of the first two goals by USCB, which came in the 16th minute and the 50th minute, were scored by Teyah Lindo, who finished with nine totals shots, six of which were on goal, en route to her first-career multi-goal game.
After the second goal by Lindo, the Warriors became more aggressive offensively as Conde had a shot blocked in the 51st minute before Warner had a shot saved just over two minutes later.
In the 64th minute, about three minutes after USCB made it 3-0, Borders fired a shot that was saved before Warner again had a shot saved three minutes later.
Webber continued to try to get on the scoreboard as Conde had another shot saved in the 77th minute, Velez had a shot blocked in the 84th minute, Borders had yet another shot saved in the 85th minute and Conde had the final Warrior shot that was again saved in the 88th minute.
Webber's Assistant Women's Soccer Coach,
Erik Casterline, who coached the Warriors on Wednesday, had this to say following the match, "I was really proud of the way the girls fought for 90 minutes today. I thought we created enough chances to get something from the game, it just unfortunately did not come off for us today. Give credit to USCB, they have a good team and were well organized. Despite the outcome, I am definitely happy with our girls' effort today."
Freshman goalkeeper
Natalie Bartek played all 90 minutes and made seven saves, but her counterpart for USCB, Logan Leask, made nine saves to earn the shutout.
Heading into its last match of the season, Webber is now 6-7-1 overall and 2-7 in The Sun Conference as the Warriors started off the year 3-0 and have since been shut out seven times over their last 10 matches. The Warriors also finished the year only 1-4-1 at home.
USCB, meanwhile, improved to 9-7 overall and 5-4 in The Sun Conference, and earned what was its sixth shutout of the season.
Webber's final match of 2019 will be a road meeting at St. Thomas University at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 2.
