MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (November 2, 2019) – After the match-tying goal from junior
Leah Borders in the 82nd minute, the 2019 campaign for the Webber International University women's soccer team came to an end in heartbreaking fashion as the Warriors fell 3-2 less than 45 seconds into the overtime period against St. Thomas University on Saturday.
Borders' goal was her fifth of the season, and it came with less than nine minutes left in regulation off the assist from
Francesca Mascali to tie the match at 2-2.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, STU's Katharina Jullich came through with her second assist of the night on a goal by Andrea Manzur to end it only 43 seconds into the extra frame.
Earlier in the match with the Warriors trailing 1-0 after the first assist by Jullich, Borders had the assist on a team-leading ninth goal of the year by senior
Megan Warner in the 47th minute to make it 1-1. The score would remain tied until the 55th minute.
Interestingly enough, each of the Warriors' two shots on the match found the back of the net as Webber nearly pulled off some theatrics in its season finale.
Freshman goalkeeper
Natalie Bartek finished with four saves and ended her freshman season with a record of 4-4 in goal.
Head Women's Soccer Coach
Brian Fallon said, "It was a well fought battle today, and hats off to all of our seniors for working so hard and putting so much into this team to help change the culture over the last two years. I am very proud of them and what is in store for the future."
Warner finished off her senior season with nine goals and four assists in 2019, which combined with her seven goals and two assists as a junior gives her a combined 38 points during her two-year career as a Warrior.
Borders, meanwhile, led the Warriors in 2019 in assists with five and finished second in goals with five and in points with 15.
Webber's other two seniors in the Class of 2019 were Mascali and
Sienna Scully. In addition to her assist on Saturday, which was her first point of the season, Mascali finished her four years in Babson Park, Florida, with six career goals and two career assists. Scully, meanwhile, finished her only season in a Warrior jersey with one goal and one assist.
As a team, Webber finished its season 6-8-1 overall and 2-8 in The Sun Conference while STU improved to 9-5-1 and 6-3-1. Webber also finished the season 2-1-1 in overtime matches on the year.
