TALLADEGA, Ala. (October 30, 2019) – The second game of the 2019-20 season for Webber International University women's basketball was a tough matchup against the No. 13-ranked team in NAIA Division-I, Talladega College. In the end, the Warriors put up a valiant effort and found themselves within two points of the lead late in the third quarter before falling by a score of 78-60 on Wednesday night.
Webber was outscored by only one point at 18-17 in the first quarter but was outscored 20-11 in the second quarter.
Then, after trailing by 10 at 38-28 at halftime, Webber started the third quarter with six straight points on baskets by
Emmarrie Carmen,
RayGene Garner and
Taniya Patrick to get to within four at 38-34 just over a minute into the second half.
In all, Webber outscored Talladega 15-7 over the first six and a half minutes of the third quarter to get within two at 45-43 after an and-one by
Paulette Burke. Unfortunately, Talladega outscored Webber 8-2 over the final three and a half minutes of the quarter to push its lead back to eight at 53-45.
Webber still outscored Talladega 17-15 in the third quarter overall.
Back-to-back buckets by Talladega to start the fourth quarter put the Warriors behind by 12 at 57-45 only 1:15 into the frame as it was a big 12-2 run for the home team overall.
Webber tried to stay in it with another score by Carmen and an and-one by
Breyonna Reed to make it a seven-point game at 57-50 with 8:10 left to play, but then Talladega pushed its lead to 11 at 63-52 with 6:19 remaining and then to 13 at 67-54 with 4:23 left.
The leading scorer for Webber was
LeAndra Franklin with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the free throw line. Franklin also added 10 boards for her first double-double between points and rebounds and second-career double-double overall, and she added four steals as well.
Next in scoring for the Warriors was Reed, who finished with 11 points and was 5-of-8 from the free throw line after going 11-for-12 from the line in Webber's season opener two days earlier.
The third and final Warrior to reach double-digits in scoring was Patrick, who had 10 points, was 5-of-8 from the field and added five rebounds.
Thalia Jackson added seven points and was 5-of-7 from the free throw line and 1-for-1 from the field while Carmen had Garner both added six points and Garner also had six boards.
After shooting 43.8 percent (7-16) from the field in the first quarter, Webber shot exactly 33.3 percent in each of the final three quarters. Additionally, Webber was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the first half before shooting only 38.5 percent (5-13) in the third quarter where the Warriors tried to make their run to get back into it.
Unfortunately, Webber was also 0-for-13 from 3-point range and was outscored 24-14 in points off turnovers, 15-10 in second chance points, 30-23 in bench points and 46-38 in points in the paint.
The next game for Webber women's basketball will be an exhibition at NCAA Division-I Florida Gulf Coast University at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 7, in Fort Myers, Florida. The Warriors' next regular-season game will then be their 2019-20 home opener inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center as Webber hosts Florida College at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, November 9.
