TOUGALOO, Miss. (October 29, 2019) – The Webber International University women's basketball team tipped off its 2019-20 campaign with an 80-75 win over Tougaloo College (Miss.) on Monday, October 28.
The Warriors led 25-15 after one quarter, 44-27 at halftime and 62-43 entering the fourth quarter.
However, the Webber defense allowed over 30 points in the fourth quarter and was outscored 32-18 over the final 10 minutes en route to having to hold on to the narrow five-point victory.
"We looked like word beaters until the last five minutes," said Webber's Head Women's Basketball Coach
Grady Morrell. "We have to learn how to close out games, especially on the road."
Senior
Breyonna Reed led both teams in scoring with a game-high 20 points. Reed, who also added six rebounds and three steals, was 4-of-8 from the field, was 1-for-1 from three and was an impressive 11-of-12 from the foul line.
Next in scoring for the Warriors was junior
LeAndra Franklin with 17 points and a 9-for-10 mark from the free throw line.
Senior
RayGene Garner added 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and was only one rebound shy of a double-double with nine.
Fellow-senior
Emmarrie Carmen was the fourth Warrior to reach double-digits in scoring as she added 10 points on a perfect 3-for-3 mark from the field and was 2-for-2 from three. She also had seven rebounds.
In all, Webber finished 32-of-40 from the free throw line, good for a mark of 80 percent, while Tougaloo shot closer to 60 percent (14-23; 60.9 percent) from the line.
Webber will return to the court tomorrow on Wedesday, October 30, in Talladega, Alabama, as the Warriors look to improve to 2-0 at Talladega College. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
